An independent bookshop owner is having to 'step away' due to health reasons

Suzy Prince, owner of the Quiet Cat Bookshop in the Grosvenor Centre, has opened up on her recent cancer diagnosis.

Unfortunately, this means she will have to take a step back from the public facing side of the businesses as she focuses on her treatment.

She said: "Ever had the feeling that the universe has got it in for you? We opened the shop in August and have been absolutely delighted by its reception since day one.

"Unfortunately, in October I was getting changed for bed one night, happened to glance in the mirror and saw some changes to my breast. Sadly, it quickly transpired that I am experiencing advanced breast cancer. There are no words.

"Treatment needs to be aggressive to give me the maximum chance of it not recurring, and my immune system will be on the floor for some time, so I've had no choice but to step away from the public facing side of the shop for now. I'm still closely involved from home."

Macclesfield-born Suzy and her partner, Ian, previously ran a stall selling gifts and books at Levenshulme Market.

The success of the stall led to Suzy setting up Bopcap Books in 2019, with the store going on to be named one of Manchester's best independent shops by Time Out in both 2023 and 2024.

Having moved back to Macclesfield four years ago, Suzy and Ian decided to open a new shop at the Grosvenor Centre.

The Quiet Cat opened its doors in August 2025 and has quickly cemented itself as one of the town's most popular independent businesses.

However, with a lengthy treatment journey ahead, the shop needs your support now more than ever.

Suzy added: "I just want to thank everyone for their support at such an awful time for me and my family.

"Every kind word or message has meant so much from people who already knew.

"On a practical note, the bookshop is our family's primary source of income, there is very little government support as I'm self employed and every purchase helps us so much. So, thank you. On every level."
