Macclesfield school pupils plunge into near-freezing waters for homelessness charity

While most people were reaching for their coats, a group of Macclesfield schoolchildren donned their swimwear to take on the ultimate 'Icebreaker Challenge'.
In a display of grit and community spirit, 55 youngsters from Beech Hall School braved the biting cold of nine degree waters at their school's outdoor swimming pool.
The event, which saw participants face the physical shock of near-freezing temperatures, raised £775 for Crisis, the national charity dedicated to ending homelessness.
The 'Icebreaker Challenge' was designed to push pupils out of their comfort zones while raising awareness of the harsh conditions faced by those sleeping rough during the winter months.
Headmaster James Allen said: "We are incredibly proud of our pupils for showing such resilience and empathy.
"Taking a dip in nine degree water is no small feat, but the children were motivated by the knowledge that their efforts would provide warmth and support for those who need it most through the incredible work of Crisis.
"We are incredibly proud of our swimming heritage at the school, and our pupils are determined to leverage their training to benefit social causes.
"The £775 raised will go directly toward Crisis frontline services, including year-round support with housing, employment, and wellbeing, as well as emergency grants for those in immediate need."

This latest challenge follows hot-on-the-heels of many gruelling swimming challenges for Beech Hall School pupils, several of which have secured 'world-first' accolades for the school and its children.
Last year, swimmers from the school became the first children to complete the Bonifacio Crossing, braving the Bonifacio Strait to conquer the 14km stretch between Corsica and Sardinia.
In 2025, Beech Hall pupils became the first children to swim the 20 Bridges of Manhattan, New York.
Moreover, multiple swim teams from the schools have successfully completed the English Channel relay, and in October 2025, 16-year old Beech Hall School pupil Rory Kaye completed an extraordinary feat, completing an English Channel solo swim.
