Lorry driver reported by police for ignoring road closure sign
A lorry driver who ignored a road closure has been caught by police.
Cheshire Police Rural Crime Team have reported the driver of a HGV whose vehicle got stuck in the snow.
The driver had chosen to ignore the road closed signs on Buxton Road, making their up the A537.
Sergeant Rob Simpson said: "The driver of this HGV is being reported for ignoring the road closure.
"Their vehicle became stuck on one of the most challenging of bends. This would force others to go head to head on the bend.
"Now you may wonder if this driver was aware of the road closures. They were, as they phoned Cheshire Police to ask about it as they were stopped on Buxton Road at the closure.
"They were told...don't ignore it!"
Providing an update at 12.35pm from outside the Cat and Fiddle, Sergeant Simpson said: "Roads are still closed.
"The gritters are out and about but they are having some complications currently."
He added: "The issue we have is there are people who are coming up in vehicles that are not appropriate, hence the reason why the road is closed.
"We really, really need people to adhere to it (the closure) as we are potentially expecting a bit more snow later on.
"Our main priority while we're out and about up here is to look after our rural communities and attend incidents and jobs up here.
"So if you venture up here you divert us from being able to help them so please play your part."
Cheshire East Council has confirmed that gritters are currently out treating routes to the high east of the borough, with further treatments scheduled from 4pm and 2am.
Routes to the south will be treated from 3pm and again at 4am, with roads in the east to be treated from 6pm and again at 4am.
A spokesperson for the council said: "Gritting often starts between 1am and 3am, so few people will see our gritters out treating the network.
"Our teams work through the night to spread salt to help keep our network moving.
"Please remember that gritting a road does not instantly remove snow and ice and it does not stop ice from forming during particularly low temperatures.
"For salt to be most effective, it needs to be spread and vehicles to be driven over it before ice has begun to form.
"Please drive to the conditions and take extra care – especially on routes that haven't been treated."
