A planning application on the Cheshire East Council website suggests a Macclesfield pub is going down the housing route.

Should councillors approve the vote, The Golden Lion Pub on the Moss is to be split into multiple apartments.

The Moss Lane pub has been shut for a year. It was a vital community asset as one of the few places to go within walking distance.

But now it seems likely that it will become accommodation.

Application 23/0102M on the Cheshire East Council proposes a "Demolition of existing public house and erection of 13 supported housing apartments (Use class C3b)."

Hewitt & Carr Architects state in a document that being vacant "the site is not being used to its full potential, and is not positively contributing to the local community."

"This proposal will provide for a much needed mental health accommodation service, acknowledging the area's growing need for supported living.

"The site will be fully managed with staff on site 24 hours per day.

"The existing public house has a footprint of 433.9 sqm. The total footprint of the proposal is 384.8sqm.

"The reduced building footprint means that the proposal increases the area available for car parking and amenity space. This allows for an external space in which residents can interact, creating a sense of community, which is important for the use of the building."

The site currently has eight parking spaces, and the applicant wants to add seven more.

It is not know how many new jobs would be created at the South Macclesfield site.

A decision is earmarked for April 24 2023.
