Earlier this year, a telecommunications pole was rejected in Rainow due to its visual appearance potentially "causing significant harm to the character and appearance of the surrounding rural area".

Two months later, a new planning application has been submitted for another mast on the same street.

This new separate application concerns Wood End Farm, Lidgetts Lane in Rainow, reference 23/2373M on the Cheshire East Council website.

A planning document reads "The proposal is for the installation of a new 25m High Valmont climbable monopole that will provide new coverage for EE and has the potential for H3G LTE."

"The proposed new facility will require the installation of a limited number of equipment cabinet housing radio equipment at ground level and in close proximity to the base of the pole. The cabinet equipment are however, permitted development (without Prior Approval) and thus do not form part of this application.

"The site has been carefully selected in a position that benefits from some screening effects so as to provide the required new coverage to the area whilst minimising visual."

The document goes on to cite that the pole is required to meet the government's rural phone coverage targets. Also stating "The cell search areas for 5G are extremely constrained with a typical cell radius of approximately 250m meaning that it would not be feasible to site the column outside of this locale."

The monopole is five metres shorter than the one rejected two months ago.

12 members of the public have responded to the plans thus far.

One cited unfounded claims about 5G with a Rainow resident stating "The harmful effects of 5G electromagnetic radiation is not clear."

Another added: "I question why they are not just updating the mast that is currently in use in Marksend Quarry."

But most of the respondents cited the previous reasons for the predecessor's rejection. One read "My husband and I have walked in this area for many years and have had the privilege to enjoy the spectacular natural scenery.

"This proposal would be visually obtrusive and incongruent in the local landscape. It would result in unacceptable impact to the countryside and wildlife."

EE & Hutchinson 3G UK Ltd will be contacted for comment.
