A Macclesfield personal trainer who is championing women's health in the town is celebrating one year in her premises.

Vikki Thomas Personal Training, who used to work as a retail manager in Co-op's across Macclesfield, began an amateur career in powerlifting in the middle of last decade.

She then became a personal trainer, and the pandemic then allowed her to do online exercises classes for women over Zoom.

This helped her cultivate and loyal client base, who she could help get toned and keep fit.

They enjoyed her company so much, that they came to support her when she opened her own gym in town.

Two premises moves later, and she is currently on the ground floor of Unit B2 Sunderland House, on Macclesfield's Sunderland Street.

This month marks a full year offer being there.

Macclesfield Nub News met with Vikki for this momentous occasion.

Vikki has also just launched a tailored weightlifting class for menopausal women, inspired by her experience being diagnosed with perimenopause at age 38. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

"My main thing is promoting women and weights," said Vikki.

"I wanted to design a gym that was not feminine, but also run by a female for women while not being pink and fluffy.

"We're a hardcore female gym. Some of our clients here are powerlifters, but you don't have to go that strong.

"I've just started a new session focussed on menopausal women, which is with a little bit less weight, for example there's no deadlifts."

Classes include boxercise, bootcamp and spin. Vikki does all but three classes. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"We also have tailored sessions for different age groups, like a group for teenage girls.

"I've always been passionate about fitness. I got into weights six years ago as I could no longer run as I got injured when running.

"I got into powerlifting, and noticed that loads of women in the gym at the time were noticing me lifting and wanted me to show them how to do it.

"So I realised there was a huge market to come and lift weights. They could feel intimidated to do it in a large, or mixed-sex gym. But here we are a welcoming space, with a focus on lifting.

The gym is open seven days a week. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"I grew massively in COVID, but was still working for other gyms, Then that year, I opened a little gym on Black Road.

"This time last year, this week. we moved to Sunderland House."

To give back to the community for her rapid rise, her members are allowed to promote (and give discounts for) their own businesses via network events at the gym. And she also provides a space for likeminded businesses like a nutritional meal delivery company from Bollington.

Vikki Thomas Personal Training has a perfect rating on Google Reviews. One of Vikki's members - called Alison - had this to say:

"Vikki is amazing, she knows every person's individually and their strengths and weaknesses", said Alison.

"She can adapt routines to suit you. I've done all of her classes, she is very professional and very friendly.

"She will encourage you and is not afraid to tell you if you need heavier weights."

When asked why she provides the best space for women to work out in Macclesfield, Vikki answered:

The classes are pay-as-you go at £6.50 each with no contract. There is also a separate membership option for £40 with classes and use of gym included. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"I have created a non-intimidating, safe space where people can ask for help in a friendly environment", added Vikki.

"You don't have to fight for a space, you don't have to work out next to a group of boys, and there's someone on hand to help you.

"All of our equipment is brand new from the past year.

"And I love to collaborate with local businesses. We work closely with Classworx, Acacia Tree and have a discount scheme for female-led business in Macclesfield.

If you want to try Vikki's gym out, you can buy a £15 three class pass, please contact her for more information on this via the details on her Facebook. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

Vikki will also be doing a fundraiser for a diabetes charity in the autumn.
