Cheshire's leading comic art festival is aiming or a record-breaking year.

MACC-POW, which was founded by Macclesfield resident Marc Jackson in 2016, unites comic art fans of young and old.

Expect to see superhero clad children, inspiring talks from leading national and international creatives, as well as a myriad of drawing activities across many fine Macclesfield independent venues.

After adapting the Festival online during COVID, 2022 saw record attendance and with more events than last year, 2023 should be even bigger!

Events include an animation workshop in the Town Hall, and the launch of a biography about comic legend Stan Lee. (Image - MACC-POW)

Highlights include an exhibitors room with over 50 people from the world of comics, and FREE cartoon portraits.

Macclesfield Nub News met up with Marc, who also runs Room For Comics and a sketch workshop every Treacle Market, to find all about the festival which is just a few days away

"When we first started it was just on one day", said Marc.

"But this year it is going to be spread across four days from Thursday June 29 to Sunday July 2.

"The first event will be at cool Chestergate bar Proper Sound, which will be an exhibition of Manchester illustrator Stanley Chow's work.

"It will be a FREE DJ event to come have a drink, have a boogie and to celebrate the launch of the MACC-POW.

"We've got events also spread over the town in more venues than ever this year.

"For example, we've got Nigel Parkinson of The Beano who will be holding a session in the library, to the last event which will be at The Depot on Chestergate.

"On the other side of town, Manchester's Emma Reynolds will be doing five minute portraits of customers at the Acacia Tree café.

"That is on Saturday the 1st from 11-12, and best of all the portraits are free."

For the first time this year, there is also a fellow comic artist who lives in Macclesfield that isn't Marc, that will also be attending.

The graphic novel events have been beefed up this year as well, to appeal to a broader crowd.

And as well as American and British artists, there will be the return of a Japanese manga drawing masterclass too.

"Jim Smith who is behind the award-winning Barry Loser series will be doing an event all over Macc", added Marc.

"He will be doing a Comics and Cortado Coffee Tour, where he will go to independent Macclesfield venues that serve cortados - mainly decaf - and he will draw a member of staff in each one for a gift that they can keep.

"Some of the stops on the tour include Flour Water Salt, Nomas, Button Warehouse, and The Picturedrome.

Most of the events are free, while some on Sunday need paid for and are of limited spaces. Please click HERE for more information on the bookable sessions.

The Festival will culminate with a vintage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film being screened for all the family at Cinemac, and finishing off with a pizza party.

The event could not be possible without the backing of local partners. From a Church Street B&B offering free or discounted rooms for guests, to Macclesfield Town Council who like to support the event and recognise the footfall it brings to town.

Marc, who is a cartoonist in his own right, has attracted the globe's best comic artists to MACC-POW, and will continue to do so for many years, especially with their ten year anniversary fast-approaching.

"Please come and support your local comic art festival", Marc also said.

"Thank to to the Macclesfield community, and wider comic art community for their support."
