A one-of-a-kind business in Macclesfield is celebrating their first birthday.

Proper Sound, located on 8 Chestergate, is a unique hybrid of leisure and retail.

The edgy shop doubles as both a record store mixed with a café.

By night, Proper Sound also turns into a bar, serving music-themed cocktails and Macclesfield alcoholic drinks.

Owner Lucie Wright said what has changed at the store in their first year of business.

"We're a gift shop and bar for audio, apparel and art", she said.

"It doesn't feel like we've been here for a year. So much has happened.

"Christmas will be a big time for us, and we're expanding our stock for it.

"On the merchandise side, we are expanding our range of Tiny Riot prints, which feature musicians such as Freddie Mercury and Elton John in a pop art style.

"As well as the cocktails, beers and ciders you can have in store, we've upped the amount of boozy stocking fillers you can take home as well.

"We also have artwork from Macclesfield artist Stuart Eaton, and stock local drinks like SiDa and Forest Gin. Our coffee is from Buxton too.

"We've also upped the events in recent months with northern soul and DJ nights.

They have a quiet courtyard at the rear of the store, which has a mural of famous Macclesfield resident Ian Curtis. They also have drink coasters of his band Joy Division, and 'Unknown Pleasures' furniture. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"We even had Peter Hook from Joy Division visit here after the new Ian Curtis mural was unveiled.

"We sell cookies here as well, so we joked that we should call them Hooky's Cookies.

"He ordered a Turkish delight one. All of our cookies are baked on-site by me personally.

"You can also buy them to take away. And we give a free little cookie away with every hot drink."

"We serve breakfast and lunchtime food as well. All dishes are under £9.

"Tom Chapman and [Macclesfield resident and rocker] Phil Cunningham from New Order also come here as well.

"Quirky by name, quirky by nature, their products span from pop culture pin badges, to dog-friendly ice cream."

Their big sellers are their Manchester-themed t-shirts, and the more expensive records like rare vinyls by The Beatles and Queen.

"We've found that lots of our customers make new friends here, as our seating inside is an island setup," Lucie added.

"We know most of our customers by name as well, it is like a little community here.

"We're also collaborating with other local businesses who have been really supportive, such as Pachamama, as the crystal shop on Church Street."

The business has a 4.9 rating on Google Reviews.
