Macclesfield bar owner and doorman gives out anti-spiking drink-stoppers
A Macclesfield doorman is giving out reusable drink-stoppers to help tackle spiking.
Security company founder Liam Lowndes (30), came up with the idea, after claims of spiking rose across the country with the return of the nightlife economy last year.
Liam also co-owns Remedy Bar and Kitchen, which opened in late 2021 in Duke's Court.
The father-of-two daughters has been a local doorman for 12 years, and has just launched giving out the free reusable covers at Remedy.
"I came up with the idea when working at working a bar in Congleton," he said.
"We were getting four people a shift claiming they'd been spiked. So it made me think, what could I do that could make a difference?
"Before the caps we had stickers, but you couldn't reuse a sticker. So I came up with these and venues have been really optimistic."
The black circular drink-stoppers will stretch from eight centimetres and 12 centimetres.
Once it is on a tight fit, you can turn the drink upside down. They can perform under cold and hot temperatures. And there is a very small hole for straws.
The covers are a more eco friendly alternative, to the single-use offerings currently on offer at bars.
"It solves a problem. Most venues are paying almost two grand for stickers. That's just to cover the cup and it gets thrown away," added Liam.
"These are dishwasher safe, they can be reused, screwed up and put in your pocket or bag to take home.
"Some venues don't want to use them because they think it makes it looks like there's a problem. But it is a nationwide problem. Knowing that I can do something to prevent it - even if it saves just one person is important to me. I have seen people be spiked.
"I would like to do my bit in putting door staff in a good light."
You can discreetly ask for a free stopper by speaking to Liam or one of his door staff at Remedy. Alternatively, they are also on display behind the bar at the Macclesfield hip-hop and sports venue.
"I've spent about £1500 on them. But it is worth it in the long run," Liam concluded.
"Most people advertise on billboards, but I'm solving a problem and I'm getting the company name out there."
A Freedom of Information request has been submitted for spiking via drinks in Cheshire.
