Pupils of Hurdsfield Primary School made the short walk to Charter Way to visit AstraZeneca last week.

Employees at AstraZeneca's Macclesfield Campus recently played host to a group of Hurdsfield Primary School pupils.

The visit began with an introductory talk about what happens behind the doors of the Campus.

The 27 children were then shown around the Global Packing Centre - where millions of medicines are packed each year - and were also given the opportunity to road-test VR headsets, 3D printing and coding.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils got to grips with the latest tech that they could very well end up working in during their working lives. A 2019 report forecast that over 23 million jobs will be enhanced by virtual reality by 2030. And research in 2021 found coding was named as the fastest growing profession in the UK by numbers of employees.

Richard Jervis, Headteacher said: " At Hurdsfield Primary School, we are always looking for opportunities for our pupils to experience learning outside of the classroom.

"The prospect for our pupils to learn about a global business from our local community was fantastic.

"Not only did it give a greater understanding of the work that takes place in the community and how this has an impact locally, nationally, and globally, but it opened our pupils' eyes to potential future career pathways."

Guy Camm, AZ Macclesfield's Campus Development Manager said "It was great to be able to give the pupils a bit of an insight into what happens behind the scenes at AZ Macclesfield – after all, these could very well be some of our scientists of the future! It's important we continue to support the local community in Hurdsfield, and we're already looking into other initiatives to help support the school."

They employ 4700 in Macclesfield.
