Macclesfield photography business celebrates five-year anniversary
A Macclesfield photography business - with a studio in the town centre - have just celebrated five years as a company.
Rolph and Co, ran by husband-and-wife team Gavin and Jenni Rolph, is situated on the cosy cobbles of 21 Back Wallgate, next to G&T Macclesfield.
The couple, who live in Lyme Green, met at Staffordshire University and have run their Macclesfield photography business for half-a-decade.
"It doesn't feel like it has been five years," said Jenni.
"It was almost as if we got running, got to a feeling of normality and then COVID," added Gavin.
"We had to be shut for a while. But we've been very busy ever since.
"We've since seen a boom in business because lots of people during COVID have had home renovations, but also spent time apart from their loved ones [so people wanted photos for both those reasons]."
Jenni added: "Since the lockdowns ended, we've definitely seen a lot more generational family shoots coming in, with people bringing whole families from great-grandparents to babies in. We've also done lots of puppy shoots.
Their most popular photo subjects are babies, families and dogs. You may know Rolph and Co from taking free photos of dogs at events such as the Treacle Market.
But their best-seller is actually their experience vouchers for a photoshoot, which is how they are introduced to most of their customers.
Their studios charming layout in a Grade II-listed building adds to the vibrant feeling of a shoot there being a proper day out.
"In the next five years, we'd like to introduce a new staff member. If we are as busy this year as we were last year, I think that will become more likely," added Gavin.
"They will help with bookings and customer service. But we will still be running the business.
"People like our business for the personal touch. We used to work for national photography companies, and got to the point where we were putting so much effort in and we decided why not start one for ourselves?
"We decided in September 2017 on honeymoon in Italy to take the plunge, and opened up in early 2018. We chose Macclesfield as we wanted a nice town with good rent. And we have fell in love with the town.
"As soon as we saw the unit, we fell in love with it and not long after we got a house here too. Back Wallgate has almost a mini-York Shambles kind of vibe. And our studio has that warm, cosy, old-timey kind of feel about it.
"The fact we are surrounded by other small local businesses, made it a no-brainer for us to come here as well, that is what Macc does best.
"We have a great relationship with the small business community. Tori from Tempranillo was so welcoming to us and Cherry Blossom Bakery [on Church Street] even made us cakes with little cameras on then when we arrived.
"And being dog lovers ourselves, we love it here for taking our dog Ralph up for walks to Shutlingsloe and around Macc Forest.
"Thank you to everyone in Macclesfield for their support."
