Macclesfield: Politicians respond to Liz Truss becoming PM
Political parties of Macclesfield have responded Liz Truss becoming the UK's new Prime Minister.
Macclesfield's Conservative MP David Rutley was asked for comment from Macclesfield Nub News. But to no response.
However, the 61-year-old MP did tweet: "Many congratulations to @trussliz. Let's all work together to support our new Prime Minister in tackling the cost of living challenges and delivering on the nation's priorities."
The Rishi Sunak supporter may continue his Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Welfare Delivery role, which was appointed to him by Boris Johnson in September 2021.
He also tweeted a picture of Britain's second female Prime Minister.
Macclesfield Liberal Democrats are believed to be preparing a statement, but echoed their national party leader Ed Davey's sentiments of Liz Truss' energy plan being a 'loan not a freeze'.
Cheshire East Green Party, who performed worst of the four parties at the 2019 General Election with 4.3% of the vote, replied with the following:
Nigel Hennerley of Cheshire East Green Party said: "With the news confirming the new leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister as Liz Truss, one can only hope some of the more outlandish remarks reported in the run up to the election result are nothing more than an appeal to a certain demographic of the Tory faithful in pursuit of a few more votes."
"The idea of doing away with speed limits on motorways while the NHS is still stretched to the max dealing with Covid and the fallout from the pandemic, speaks volumes of a Conservative Party that is out of touch with reality. Especially, not only in an energy crisis, but a climate crisis as well.
"For further proof of this we see an intention to reverse the ban on fracking. What exactly has changed to safety of fracking in the last two years is not clear.

"It will still cause earthquakes, still not be safe to public health as no sufficient set back distance is possible in the UK, It will still be a high risk to the environment and waste management, and fundamentally will take a decade to develop the industry to production levels, not make any difference to the price we pay for gas due to internationally set market prices, and continue to cause climate change emissions for the best part of the next hundred years.
Macclesfield Labour Party, which got 32.6% of the vote in the most recent General Election, reiterated the sentiments of Cheshire East Labour Party.
They cited Labour's Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP, who recently alleged that Liz Truss' cost of living plans will leave four million families without any additional support – while Labour's plans would save minimum wage earners more than £40 a week in Cheshire East, they claim.
Leader of Cheshire East Council, Councillor Sam Corcoran said in his capacity of a Labour politician, that "climate change is the greatest challenge facing this generation, but it was hardly featured in the leadership contest."
A spokesperson added: "In the wake of Ofgem's announcement that energy bills will go up by 80 per cent, Rachel Reeves accuses the Government of failing to meet the scale of the national emergency.
"Under Truss' plans a couple living outside London, both working full-time and earning the average wage with one child will not be eligible for any additional cost of living support. It means almost four million families would miss out.
"There are almost 100 areas where families on an average wage will lose out under Truss' plans - including South Cheshire."
Councillor Sam Corcoran, Labour Leader of Cheshire East Council, explained: "Labour's plans include insulating 19 million homes.
"This will reduce carbon emissions and help tackle climate change as well as reducing energy bills by up to £1,000 per home."
In addition to David Rutley MP, Macclesfield Conservatives were also contacted, and a spokesperson released the following statement.
"Macclesfield Conservative Association welcomes the election of Liz Truss as our new party leader and her coming appointment by Her Majesty as Prime Minister.
"We look forward to her working to deliver our 2019 manifesto and to wish her every success in tackling the massive issues we face in this country as the world recovers from Covid-19 and as we suffer the consequences of Russia's illegal war against Ukraine.
"I hope we will now see concerted effort to tackle the cost of energy, through bringing online new supply, increasing our energy security, continuing to stand up to Putin and Russia's illegal invasion, and also helping those most in need through these difficult times."
