The rating heralds an exciting new chapter for the Macclesfield-based home, which was credited with having ‘dramatically improved’ following negative feedback from regulators earlier this year.

A Moss Lane care home has been rated as one of our town's best.

Weston Park Care Home has been awarded a 'Good' rating by social care regulators the Care Quality Commission (CQC), in recognition of a huge amount of hard work and commitment to quality care.

The Macclesfield-based home, which offers nursing and specialist dementia care for over 100 residents, was rated 'good' across all five categories of safety, effectiveness, responsiveness, leadership, and quality of care.

The home was credited with having 'dramatically improved' following negative feedback from the regulators earlier this year. New Registered Manager Trish McCaffrey, appointed in February this year, Deputy Manager Becky Tracey, and the whole care team have achieved this impressive milestone with the huge improvements they have made at the home over the past few months, with the full support of Cheshire East Council, residents and relatives of the home, and an array of visiting professionals. The report praised the team for their efforts, noting that 'leaders and the culture they created promoted high-quality, person-centred care'.

Resident involvement has been crucial to the home's recent success: staff were keen that residents were fully involved in decisions about how the home is run, as well as any upgrades or plans.

CQC inspectors were particularly impressed by the way in which residents 'had the opportunity to influence how they were supported'. One resident, Alison O'Donnell, attends crucial meetings about the home with manager Trish McCaffrey, sharing opinions and ideas about the home on behalf of her fellow residents. From regular resident and relative forums to care planning discussions, the home encourages a sense of empowerment and independence among its residents.

As part of the home's improvement plan, Activities Coordinator Alison Davis has been instrumental in helping to bring fun and entertainment back into the home. Alison is currently developing an exciting new activities programme with residents, to further promote resident and relative involvement.

The report also acknowledged the strengthened processes and policies that have been reinforced through refresher training for the staff team. These include improvements to staff rotas and communication, the home's now excellent governance systems, and its rigorous approach to resident monitoring, which have all contributed to its success.

Weston Park is already working to ensure that its 'good' rating is sustained to become a long-term legacy of excellence, and has some exciting new plans in place for the home. First to be completed will be the garden redesign project, which will be led by residents, relatives and staff collectively. The garden redesign will give residents more space to comfortably enjoy the outdoors all year round and will include a tranquil space to remember those that the community has sadly lost, especially during the pandemic. Residents will also be able to enjoy a newly refurbished hairdresser room, which is being upgraded as part of the home's improvement project.

Weston Park plans to host a special event later this month to celebrate their CQC 'Good' rating with residents, relatives, staff and members of the local community. If you would be interested in attending to meet the team and residents or to learn more about the home and its exciting plans for the future, please get in touch with Registered Manager Trish McCaffrey on 01625 613280.

Trish McCaffrey, Registered Manager of Weston Park Care Home, commented:

"Having the CQC recognise the hard work we have put into the home means a lot to all of us at Weston Park.

The team at Cheshire East Council have been invaluable in supporting us on our journey of improvement, and our 'Good' rating was only achieved because everyone had the same end goal: to make the home as high quality and caring a place as possible for our residents and their loved ones.

We are excited to build on our success and continue to make Weston Park a place where residents are involved in their care and their community, and where they feel truly at home."

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson commented:

"The council is delighted that Weston Park has been awarded a good CQC rating, which is great news given the very high standards the CQC sets to ensure residents are being well cared for.

"From the outset, management and staff have been engaging, enthusiastic and worked closely with system partners to ramp up the quality and experience at the home for residents. The council is happy to continue to support the care home to ensure the safety of residents."

Residents quoted in the CQC report said:  "The staff are very nice and look after me. Very caring and look after all my needs."

Another said: "I hope [CQC's] review is better as they deserve it."

A final resident was quoted with "Weston Park is lovely… they are very good and caring… and I feel very safe."
