A Macclesfield shop has joined forces with Macclesfield Town Council to help organise a massive litter picking day.

Plastic free zero waste store Scoop and Scales are used to helping out the environment at their site, but they also do their bit for the planet outside of their Roe Street premises.

They've teamed up with the Town Council to help Macclesfield in this summer's Britain in Bloom Contest, which welcomes judges to judge our town on floral plants and presentation.

Scoop and Scales Co-Founder Matthew Todd has organised over 40 litter picks in Macclesfield in the past year, and will spearhead this month's pick.

"On Sunday July 17, we're delighted to help Macclesfield Town Council with a litter pick to support Macclesfield's Britain in Bloom Campaign.

"Last time they got a Silver Award, and hopefully this time we can help secure them the gold by cleaning up our town.

"There will be two litter picks the public can attend, happening at the same time. One at Scoop and Scales, so outside The Heritage Centre, and one outside West Park.

"We will attack the route from both sides, and hopefully meet in the middle somewhere.

"We do three or four litter picks a month, but we hope this will be the most popular one yet. Normally about 20 people attend, but it would be great to get over double that.

The Sunday July 17 litter pick starts at 3pm, and will conclude by 5pm. Litter pickers and rubbish bags will be provided, but if you have your own please bring it, to avoid disappointment.

"It is great to see other businesses have committed to help, we've got Russell Hope from ELOV involved.

"And we're a co-operative here, so as well as trying to make the shop financially sustainable, we want to get out there and do interesting stuff what is good for the town.

"The comments and interaction we get from the public has been amazing, many have ended up joining us on future picks. So come along, meet new friends and feel-good while doing it."

Matthew has recommended to visit the MaccLitterMap group on Facebook, for more information.

Macclesfield Town Council employee Abigail Sherratt is elated for the upcoming event.

"Macclesfield Town Council are proud to be working with Scoop and Scales on a town centre litter pick,' she said.

"We encourage everyone to have pride in their town, and litter picking is a great place to start.  Any litter removed from the natural environment helps wildlife and creates a better space for us too.

"Councillors and Town Council staff will be present at the litter pick, and we encourage everyone to come along and help.

"Even if we all just remember to take our own litter home, or if we picked up and disposed of one piece that we found on the way to school or work, it would make a huge difference to our town."
