A man who fundraised almost £6000 with two Ukrainian relief concerts in Macclesfield, has helped launch a fund for young Ukrainian musicians.

Ukrainian-born pianist Ivan Hovorun performed two free concerts to raise money for Ukraine humanitarian causes, at St. Michael's Church in Macclesfield.

In total, he's raised over £10,000 with concerts of this kind across the country. A feat which was recognised by his former music school Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

The Manchester-based school, which he attended from 2004 to 2011, invited Ivan to perform a short concert to celebrate the launch of a fund for the seven Ukrainian refugees currently studying at RNCM.

"It was an honour to perform at my old school," said Ivan.

"When I first performed at the RNCM in 2004, someone donated £100 to me. So I will continue this legacy on by donating the same amount to the six new Ukrainian students, to help pay for their tuition.

"Thank you again to St. Michael's Church in Macclesfield for hosting me for the two concerts in April and June, without them, I may not have been here to launch the new RNCM Ukrainian student bursary fund today."

Ivan now hopes to take a break from fundraising, but is eternally grateful for anyone who has donated to his charity concerts, or the new RNCM bursary fund.

The educational institution hopes to raise £50,000 to allow the Ukrainian musicians to continue their studies, following their disruption after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

One of the Ukrainian bursary students who will be attending the RNCM thanks to the fund is a female saxophonist from Cheshire East.
