A grassroots campaign to protect peatland and wildlife habitat from housing in South Macclesfield has gained two new companies as allies.

At the start of the week, Macclesfield brewers RedWillow Brewery announced that they have launched a Session IPA called Senseless.

The new brew will support the campaign to prevent 950 homes and a link road being built on land near the Danes Moss Nature Reserve.

10p per pint sold will go straight to the crowdfunder to mount a legal challenge to Cheshire East Council and Barratt Homes.

A Willow Tit features on the design of the beer label, which is one of the species threatened by the housing development.

Their Macclesfield bar is pouring it on cask now, and on top of customers sales of the beer, they will also donate for when businesses buy the beer to serve in their premises as well.

A few days after the beer was announced, a second Macclesfield business pledged their support for the campaign.

Electrician Richard Wheatcroft has covered his white van in art and iconography to raise awareness for the cause.

He said: "I've got my van all stickered up! Gone for, "Dont talk to me about electrical work, talk to me about this!" #SaveDanesMoss in Macclesfield. [There's] hundreds of thousands of tons of peatland and the many rare & endangered Species need our help. Wave if you see me!"

Wheatcroft Electrical LLP and RedWillow Brewery join other Macclesfield businesses like Plums Kitchen, Cheshire Balloons and Prestbury Plant and Garden in publicly opposing the campaign.

Part-landowners and decision-makers Cheshire East Council previously responded to the requests for comment with ""If the council did not proceed with this development on its land, it is very likely that the private sector would take the lead and the council would have much less control over the ultimate development of the land.

"The Council is committed to combatting climate change. Through our Environment Strategy and Carbon Neutral Action Plan we have committed to becoming carbon neutral in our own operations by 2025 and to assist with reducing the borough's carbon footprint."

Elsewhere in news relating to the 'SAVE DANES MOSS' campaign, part of South Macclesfield Development Area has now been designated as a Local Wildlife Site. It is not known how this will affect the proposed development.

The Danes Moss development is believed to contain over 200,000 cubic tonnes of peat, which, if released would contribute heavily to climate change. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Nub News)
