Macclesfield women raise £500 in for Brain Tumour Research swimathon
A Macclesfield mum and her pal has swam the length of Macclesfield to Birmingham - for Brain Tumour Research.
Tytherington resident Vivienne Landers (71) decided to swim almost every day in August at Macclesfield Leisure Centre.
She chose to do the arduous task in memory of her son Bobby Kwon, who unfortunately passed away in April 1998 after a brain anuresym.
Her friend and fellow Macclesfield Seal Swimming Club member Zoe Papaphilippou joined her.
The pair have raised just short of £500 for the national brain tumour charity, and have kept up the regular swimming despite the challenge being over.
"We thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and are still motivated", said Vivienne.
"I feel as if I want to do more. I've gotten stronger and faster.
"We set out to do this to raise awareness for Brain Tumour Research and all types of cancers, but now we want to highlight the importance of learning to swim as well, there are lots of kinds and adults who can't.
"Thank you to everyone who has shown us support. It means the world to us. I've had cancer myself, and friends and family who have as well. So has Zoe's father."
Vivienne personally swam just shy of 24 miles, one mile for every year it has been since her beloved son passed away.
Swimming teacher Zoe ploughed through 33 miles.
Inspired by the previous challenge, Zoe is now doing another sponsored swim for Aspire, a national spinal cord injuries challenge.
Broken Cross resident Zoe, who met Vivienne through teaching swimming lessons at Macclesfield Leisure Centre, had this to say about her friend.
"She has caught the swimming bug from me," said Zoe.
"We've known each other for eight years now.
"I was delighted to be a part of such a special challenge.
"I'm very proud of her. She doesn't let anything stop her."
Former Macclesfield Tesco employee Vivienne - who has been a Macclesfield resident for over a quarter-century - had this to say to anyone who is attempting a charity challenge.
"Never give up, you are capable of doing anything," she concluded.
"Once you put your mind to it, you can do it."
