Macclesfield residents have shown their support for trans rights.

Earlier this year, the team at Yas Bean set out to help bring the area's LGBTQ+ community together.

Each month the iconic pink coffee shop hosts 'Stride Of Pride', a relaxed social walk with free cake and coffee.

April's edition, on Saturday (April 26), held particular significance, with many having felt the impact of the Supreme Court's ruling that the legal definition of a woman should be based on biological sex.

Mika Johnson, co-founder of Yas Bean, said: "This month's walk was special because it was in solidarity with the trans community after the Supreme Court's ruling on April 16.

"We raised £300 for UK trans charity Not A Phase and people came out in droves to show their support, wearing the colours of the trans flag.

"We also penned a letter to our local MP Tim Roca, listing questions and concerns following on from the ruling, which attendees signed in support.

"We were really pleased that Tim attended the walk and showed his support to the local LGBTQ+ community at such an uncertain time."

Mika and his husband Dan Hardman opened Yas Bean on Buxton Road in 2021.

Since then, it has become one of Macclesfield's most popular coffee shops, with a second, smaller, venue opening last year.

In February, following the re-election of Donald Trump, Mika and Dan decided they wanted to do more to support the local LGBTQ+ community.

Mika said: "We've actually wanted to do something like this for a long time, as a way of bringing our community together and uplifting LGBTQ+ people in Macclesfield.

"Back in February it felt like every day we were hearing news from the US about trans and non-binary people having their rights taken away.

"Our team at Yas Bean and our customers were really affected by it, so we knew we had to do something to bring a bit of light to the community.

"It's been incredible to see attendance grow every month and for LGBTQ+ people to be so visible in our small town."

Stride Of Pride has taken place each month since then.

Crowds gather at Yas Bean where they are given free coffee before setting off on a walk.

Usually around 3km in length, the walk ends back at Yas Bean where attendees are treated to free cake.

The next Stride Of Pride will take place in May.

The exact date and details will be confirmed on Yas Bean's Instagram and Facebook pages nearer the time.
