A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in Macclesfield.

Police were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman at an address on Pearson Street at around 6.48pm on Friday (July 18).

Officers and paramedics attended and a 72-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Home Office post mortem has revealed that the cause of death was from multiple injuries to the head and neck.

A 49-year-old man has subsequently been arrested and remains in custody at this time.

Detective Inspector Eli Atkinson said: "I'd like to reassure residents that this is an isolated incident, and we have made an arrest.

"Enquiries are continuing with searches likely to be taking place in the area, so there will be an increased police presence."
