A new Aldi store has opened in Macclesfield.

The supermarket, called Macclesfield Silk Road, was opened at 8am on Thursday morning.

Cutting the ribbon was Team GB hockey player and Olympian Sarah Jones.

The Welshwoman was joined by pupils of Macclesfield's Puss Bank School, to officially open the new store located at the Barracks Mill Retail Park.

Macclesfield charities can even pick-up unwanted food and products from the supermarket. Those interested should introduce themselves to the new Aldi via [email protected]. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

It is the first of the six retail units to open in the Barracks Mill Retail Park.

The store comes with ample car parking space, four electric car chargers, and a plastic recycling bin.

Over 40 jobs have been created with the new store, which beats BP Bulse, B&M, Costa, M&S Food and KFC as the first Barracks Mill retailer to open.

The new Macclesfield Aldi is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm, and Bank Holidays 8am to 8pm.

The new store doesn't currently have pedestrian access, which will impact those without cars and disabled people.

However, a new footpath from the Hibel Road Tesco is being built. Aldi have been contacted for comment.

Earlier this month, the German discount supermarket revealed that they would be keeping Macclesfield's older Aldi store on Queen Victoria Street open, alongside the new store.
