New Macclesfield coffee roaster weaves together local heritage and great taste
A new coffee roastery has opened inside a café-bar in Macclesfield.
Located inside The Fountain on Park Green, Warp & Weft is a new coffee roaster that combines Macclesfield history with ethically sourced ingredients.
Macclesfield Nub News met with key personalities behind Warp & Weft to find out more.
Mani Keleher is the Head Roaster for Warp & Weft, and is employed by Bollington Brewing Company to work inside The Fountain to roast the coffee they serve in house. He's been working in the coffee industry for 15 years.
When asked on the idea behind Warp & Weft, Mani says, "Lee and Kirsten, the owners of Bollington Brewery, have had it in mind for ages."
"Three years ago they bought the roaster, [and] set it up in here when they opened The Fountain, " he added.
"They weren't really sure how to progress from there.
"Mutual friends put us in touch, and that conversation turned into: basically you can hire me!"
The coffee will be stocked at all four of Bollington Brewery's flagship venues.
Jeff Coghlan is the founder of Macclesfield creative agency, Matmi. Their office is two doors down from The Fountain on Park Green. Jeff designed the packaging of Warp & Weft coffee.
"We wanted something which was about the heritage of Macclesfield," Jeff explains.
"But also something about a foreign import that came up, that we refined.
"So we cross reference it to the Silk Industry, thinking about buying a cocoon and a silk worm, and then shipping it over from China and actually spinning it into silk."
"We thought about the complexities of that and the complexities of the coffee bean coming from Colombia.
"Warp & Weft is the way fabric is made, it's the weaving of two things together, just as it is with coffee where you're weaving different things together to get a final result.
"The result can be so different. So many variations just based on simple ingredients."
It's not just the brand name that weaves the similarities of silk and coffee production together, the logo and The Fountain building itself bring Macclesfield further into the loop too.
"For the brand colours, we were influenced by Macclesfield Stripe," Jeff revealed.
"Macclesfield is well known for its stripe material.
"The history of The Fountain building was the silk haberdashery for Macclesfield when this used to be the art deco department store," explains Jeff.
"You can see how it comes together naturally."
The brand design and location isn't the only thing that ties into Macclesfield's history. The sourcing of the coffee clearly shows how the production line has been brought into the 21st century.
"Basically what we're trying to do is make coffee very accessible but super, super tasty. And in order to do that, we source beautiful coffee."
"We source it from my friend's town in Colombia, he was born in Colombia but lives in Macc now. [And runs Wild Tatama in Macclesfield's South Park.]
"The farm where he grew up is part of a little coffee association." Mani adds.
"What Warp & Weft buy, if you want to put it in technical coffee terms, is an 84+ scoring coffee, which means nothing to anyone but in terms of coffee it's really, really good!
"It's coffee that's contributed from all the farmers within the association and we buy that as our house coffee.
"The name of our main source of green coffee is Tatamá Coffee."
"Our idea is to work with people that we know and with producer-focused supply chains," Mani finishes.
Warp & Weft sells a range of coffee which can be viewed HERE..
"The coffee is some of the best I've ever tasted," Jeff proclaimed.
"It is pretty amazing," Mani agrees. "It's blown a lot of people's minds.
"I am keen to work with and support local businesses. They can reach me at [email protected]."
As mentioned previously, Mani roasts coffee at The Fountain, in house. He will also sell coffee for customers to take home.
Warp & Weft coffee bags can also be bought in five other places in the local area, they are: The Park Tavern in Macclesfield, The Vale Inn in Bollington, The Cask Tavern in Poynton, The Foundry in Congleton and The Macclesfield Silk Museum. The latter of which, is the only non-Bollington Brewery Company owned venue you can score the coffee at.
