A historic country pub once threatened with closure is now considered one of the region's very best.

The Hanging Gate Inn in Higher Sutton was recently named Pub of the Season by the Macclesfield and East Cheshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

It marks a huge moment for the pub, that less than ten years ago looked like it may shut forever.

Dave Gittins, chair of Macclesfield and East Cheshire CAMRA, said: "The Hanging Gate won our Spring Pub Of The Season award for its great quality cask beer offering, which showcases local breweries.

"Not only that, it also supports local food vendors, runs community events and makes the most of its location with its fantastic views over Cheshire.

"There's always a warm welcome and its therefore a pub we recommend to both locals and visitors to the area alike."

The Hanging Gate was owned for many years by Hydes Brewery.

However, in late 2017 the company decided that too much money needed to be spent on it, and so it was closed down.

At one point looking set to become a wedding venue, the pub was eventually taken over by Hilary Spokes and James Schofield.

The couple have completely turned things around and on Saturday, April 25, they received their award from Macclesfield and East Cheshire CAMRA.

Hilary said: "James is responsible for the cellar and keeps the beer lines meticulously clean. We think our altitude may also be why our beer tastes so good! And as a free house we are very lucky to be able to support so many great local breweries."

Pete Farrand, CAMRA's pubs information coordinator, added: "We were delighted to present this award to a pub that was threatened with permanent closure less than 10 years ago.

"In the current economic climate, rural pubs are amongst those most threatened. And this is definitely one of those!

"The most spectacular thing about this pub is the view. At 320 metres above sea level, you can see a long way on a clear day."
