Potential scammers have been posing as ScottishPower.

Police in Macclesfield have been made aware of an incident where someone claiming to be from the energy company attempted to gain entry to a property in order to 'read the meter'.

The home owner rightly became suspicious when the person, who was wearing a ScottishPower uniform, refused to show any ID.

They called the company who advised them that there were no ScottishPower representatives in the area that day.

Sharing advice on what to do in such a situation, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "If you receive an unexpected cold call from an energy company please always check their ID and if they wish to access your home always contact the company to make sure that they are legit.

"Please do not call a number that has been provided to you by the cold caller as this may connect to someone involved in the scam.

"Most companies will arrange a time and date with you if they need access to your home or give you a time frame when someone may be in the area to read your meter.

"If you're unsure, don't open the door."
