School reopens drama and music wing two-and-a-half years after RAAC-enforced emergency closure
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 27th Apr 2026
The Macclesfield Academy officially reopened its newly refurbished drama and music facilities earlier this month.
The specialist wing has been shuttered since September 2023, following the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).
It now boasts a state-of-the art drama studio, an enlarged music room and four individual practice rooms.
Speaking at the launch event, headteacher Mat Galvin paid tribute to the staff and students who maintained the curriculum under challenging circumstances.
He said: "Our performing arts team has shown incredible dedication, delivering high-quality education without their specialist facilities for over two years.
"To have them back in a state-of-the-art environment today is a significant milestone for the school."

The reopening ceremony was attended by Tim Roca MP and Awais Khan from the Department for Education, marking the end of a period where performing arts students were taught in temporary classrooms.
Mr Roca said: "This government has committed billions of pounds to improving the education estate across the country, helping to create better learning environments for our young people.
"It was a pleasure to meet Mr Galvin and speak with students during my visit. We were treated to a wonderful singing performance by Holly, one of the students.
"I also spoke about how important it is that schools are safe and that learning spaces are accessible for everyone. And I highlighted the importance of the arts, including music and drama.
"They are not only vital for creativity and personal development, but also central to the UK's position as a cultural superpower.
"Our creative industries have a global reach and influence, and it is essential that young people have the opportunity to be part of that success."
