Two kittens are on the road to recovery after being found in a tied black bin bag near the Macclesfield Canal.

A dog walker made the discovery earlier this month after being alerted to the bag, discarded dangerously close to the water's edge, by her pet.

The kittens, a male and female believed to be siblings and around 12 weeks old, were immediately taken to Wright and Morten Veterinary hospital on Heather Close.

Following their initial examination, vet Olivia Donoghue confirmed that despite their harrowing ordeal, both were in remarkably good health.

Visibly shaken, the pair were settled into a warm, quiet pen to recover together for the evening.

Olivia says they appeared much more settled the next day, showing significant progress as they began eating and playing with many cuddles from all the staff.

The siblings, affectionately named Luke and Leia by veterinary staff, were found to be without microchips and showed clear signs of abandonment.

After waiting the legal seven day waiting period and with no owners coming forward, a new home could now be found.

Luke and Leia received comprehensive care, including neutering, microchipping, and parasite treatment.

Veterinary care assistant Hazel Simpson, who helped find the pair a new home, said: "Because they are so deeply bonded, we knew they had to stay together - and we are so happy to say that a loving new home has been found for the pair.

"They have moved in with a wonderful family who can give them all the attention they deserve.

"With children to play with and older resident cats to keep an eye on them, they are in the very best of hands.

"It's a wonderful ending they truly deserve after what could have been a very tragic start."
