Strike looming at Macclesfield College as staff reject latest pay offer
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 30th Jun 2026
A strike could be looming at Macclesfield College.
Staff have voted to reject a pay offer put forward by the college on Park Lane, the University and College Union announced on Tuesday, June 30.
The union has indicated that its members are prepared to strike if the college does not come back with another offer.
'Disappointed' with this news, Macclesfield College say they have offered the maximum amount they are able to.
A spokesperson said: "We are naturally disappointed that UCU have chosen to reject the college's final offer.
"The decision on pay was not taken lightly.
"The 3% consolidated pay award, backdated to February 2026, is the maximum the college can sustainably afford while ensuring its financial stability."
In an online ballot, UCU members at Macclesfield College voted by 95% to reject the latest offer, on a turnout of 82%,
The college is due to be taken over by Cheshire College South and West on Saturday, August 1.
As such, the UCU say this could mean that staff head on strike within weeks of the college's takeover.
UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: "College management at both Macclesfield and Cheshire College South and West, now needs to reflect on this overwhelming vote to reject its low ball pay offer and come back to the table with an award that reflects the dedication of its staff, and the crucial work they do to teach and support students.
"If management refuses to begin serious and meaningful negotiations, our members will unfortunately be forced to vote for strike action and could picket the start of term, just as the college comes under new ownership."
