A teenager has braved the shave in honour of his cancer-battling mum.

When Ryan Moors was nine, he watched his mum Gena return home from breast cancer treatment with a bare scalp and a brave smile, not fully grasping the weight of her battle.

Now, five years later, Congleton resident Ryan has shaved his head in a heartfelt tribute to her while raising vital funds for the breast cancer department at Macclesfield District General Hospital.

He said: "At the age I was, I didn't know how serious and life-changing it was for my mum but when she came home with no hair on her head, it clicked that this wasn't an easy thing to deal with.

"Thanks to the support she had around her and the strength she had to fight it she caught it early and she is a survivor."

Ryan, who is now 14, is following in his mother's footsteps after she launched the 'Splash of Pink' campaign in 2023.

Gena's efforts have since raised over £59,000 for the breast care unit where she received treatment, helping to fund lifesaving equipment and support services.

Her son Ryan's shave took place on Friday (July 25) at Congleton-based barbers, Barbertini, who also donated the cost of the cut to his cause.

Following the shave, Gena said: "I'd like to say that I am incredibly emotional and very proud of my son.

"He wanted to do this off his own back and the words on his Just Giving page really made me cry.

"I forget that my kids were kids when I went through the treatment so to read his words really choked me."

At the time of writing, Ryan has raised just under £1,000 for the breast cancer department at Macclesfield District General Hospital.
