Teenager to walk through Macclesfield countryside to highlight climate emergency
A young man will trek through Macclesfield's countryside to highlight the climate emergency.
Wolfgang Wood (17) is walking 50 miles from Kidsgrove to Manchester (including the entire length of the Gritstone Trail from Kidsgrove to Disley), to highlight the Climate Emergency and remind us all that many short journeys can be done on foot.
Wolfgang's walk will take place on September 8 and September 9.
The teenager, who is a member of the Cheshire East Green Party, is also walking to raise funds to "help with future awareness of greener travel and will be used to support the effort of pressuring local and national authorities to make positive change to public transportation."
And he's raised £60 so far, before even taking a step.
Local places he will pass include the Macclesfield Canal, the parish of Sutton, Tegg's Nose, Rainow and Bollington.
"I was shocked to read on the BBC website that 60% of 1-2 mile journeys are taken by car. Cars on average produce 290 grams of CO2 per mile," said Wolfgang.
"This means that changing from driving a daily 1.5 mile journey to walking 5 days a week could save over 100 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.
"To show that it is possible to replace short-distance car travel with walking, I'm doing an extreme example of a 50-mile continuous walk from Kidsgrove train station to Piccadilly station in Manchester using the Gritstone Trail and various canal towpaths."
Wolfgang, 17, lives in Scholar Green near Alsager and is a student at Reaseheath College near Nantwich. He founded Cheshire East Young Greens to support the work of the Green Party in and around Cheshire East. This is their maiden expedition.
All funds raised will go to the Cheshire East Young Greens group. Macclesfield residents can donate in support of his awareness campaign by clicking HERE.
Rich McCarthy, Co-Chair of Cheshire East Green Party said: "Wolfgang has planned a great, local expedition which both highlights our society's problem with its attitude to and use of transport, and at the same time is an adventure which can be achieved without despoiling the environment or our climate in any way.
"This is definitely a great example of challenging ourselves in a sustainable manner and I'm looking forward to hearing all about the walk once he's had a good sleep afterwards."
