The Top 10 Macclesfield FC Moments of the Season

By Matt Spink 6th Apr 2022

Macclesfield FC have just lifted the North West Counties Football League Premier Division trophy. And there is a chance for more silverware with the Macron Cup.

It is a remarkable achievement, given 19 months ago Macclesfield Town FC ceased to exist, and the subsequent phoenix club was formed shortly thereafter.

But while we wait for the next game, we thought we would recap our favourite Macclesfield FC moments of the 2021/22 season.

10. Stealth Gymnasium finally opens

The only non-footballing moment on this list, but one that is making profit and putting money into the club, we have Macclesfield FC's gym.

Three games into this memorable season, Stealth Gymnasium finally opened their doors.

Deemed to be 'the most prestigious gym in Macclesfield', the facilities located at Macclesfield FC and have strong tie ins with the first team.

Most memorably when the first team trained in the facilities in preparation for their FA Cup tie against Burscough, after starting this season off with a bang.

And while they didn't beat Burscough, it convinced many a Silkmen fan to get a membership at the gym, as another way to support the club. Get yours here.

9. The previous Macclesfield football manager to win silverware briefly returned to Macclesfield FC

In August, two-time Macc Town boss John Askey agreed to join the return to club in a short-term mentoring role. (Image - @thesilkmen)

Earlier on in the season we welcomed back a Macclesfield footballing legend, John Askey.

His arrival came in-between a slew of summer signings - but no Silks fans expected this one!

Four years after he gained promotion for the defunct club Macclesfield Town, the legend returned as an advisor to his ex-player and Silkmen gaffer Danny Whitaker.

The 56-year-old has Macclesfield Town's record for player appearances, between the years of 1984 and 2003 he made 679 appearances as well as having two managerial spells, with the second spell taking the team to the FA Trophy Final and the famous National League title.

Askey's time helping 'Magic Man' Danny Whitaker was short-lived however. As three months later, Askey left the role to manage York City, but it didn't dampen the an exciting, brief but memorable appointment when it lasted.

8. Macclesfield FC sign two former Premier League footballers

Two exciting signings were made by Macclesfield FC at the start of this season, as the silkmen managed to sign two former Premier League players, Neil Danns and Alex Bruce. Macclesfield FC Director of Football Robbie Savage had played with both at Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City respectively, in England's top football competition.

Bruce was signed in in August, meanwhile Danns put pen to paper in September. Robbie Savage described both as 'a fantastic additions' to the team and this proved to be true for Danns.

Neil Danns, who has over 426 professional Football League appearances, ended up being a fine addition to the squad in this title winning season, scoring in the double digits for the Silks.

Danns is also nominated for non-league football awards for his performance. (And rightly so we think!) He became Macclesfield FC's first international footballer, and will play for the club next season.

Alex Bruce however, chose to leave to Macclesfield FC to join his dad at West Brom. The Northern Irishman played just three times in defence. Regardless, let's hope these two statement signings are just the first ex-Prem players coming to the Leasing.com Stadium, as Macc climb the divisions.

7. Macclesfield FC's first competitive win (against Burscough)

Of course, Macclesfield's maiden competitive victory had to make the list of the best moments this season.

A Leon Arnasalam strike secured the 1-0 home win in the league against Burscough and marked a memorable day, not just in the season, but in the history of the club.

Leon's historic goal came from well worked counterattack, after Burscough came close to scoring a goal of their own from a corner at the other end of the pitch.

This game definitely was a sign of things to come throughout this season.

6. Two 6-0 wins in this season

Macclesfield secured not one, but two, 6-0 thrashings this season, although one felt a lot more significant than the other.

When the title seemed in jeopardy after a period of doubt at the start of the year, this 6-0 win away at fellow Cheshire club Vauxhall Motors put most people's doubts to bed. A brace from Neil Danns and James Berry-McNally secured that win.

Our second 6-0 victory came after the title was secured, treated as more of a victory lap for our Silks, the boys managed to treat the home fans to a win against Avro FC.

In this game Berry-McNally again got onto the score sheet, this time managing to get is hat-trick and an extra goal for good luck.

James Berry McNally prepares to take a corner. The ex-Altrincham player would score in both of this season's 6-0 victories. Twelve goals and two clean sheets. We just had to include both of these emphatic victories on this list! (Image - Macclesfield

5. The release of Macclesfield F.C documentary

Macclesfield FC's already-popular documentary made the jump from BBC iPlayer on to terrestrial TV in the winter, highlighting a big moment for the club as we gained some fame and new fans up and down the country.

Robbie Savage hinted that this move may have been up to the incredible support of our fans, which gave the original release of the documentary on iPlayer so many views.

Although this moment did not occur on the pitch, it gave all of us a much-loved look behind the scenes at this beautiful club. It even made Nub News gather new fans across the country. The finale released ahead of the promotion-confirming home game against Ashton Athletic, to less national media fanfare but was still a joyous occasion.

4. Victory over Cheshire Rivals Northwich Victoria

This dramatic and nerve-racking game falls in fourth on our list of the top ten moments, the memorable and end-to-end game will be most remembered for the final few minutes.

Young loanee James Berry McNally made his mark with what seemed like the goal that relieved tension in the third minute of stoppage time, making the game 4-2 to the silks.

That is until Northwich managed to crawl one back just seconds after the re-start, again making the game a tight finish, the Silkmen did secure the win however.

Ask some of the older Macc fans and they will tell you that the Vic used to be a traditional rival of Macc Town in the Cheshire League, with both team's since making a fall from grace to the same division. But the historic relevance of the tie made the

3. Comeback against top of the table challengers Skelmersdale FC, game finished 3-1 to the silks

Number three on the list is possibly one of the most important games of this season, when Macclesfield FC faced off against fellow title challengers Skelmersdale FC. What made this game even more impressive is the comeback the Silks had to pull out of the bag after trailing 1-0 in the game.

James Berry-McNally started the comeback as he grabbed the equaliser, with Neil Danns firing in the second to take Macclesfield back to top of the league (at this point in the season) and finally Brandon Lonsdale securing the much needed 3-points. This game definitely was a vital one in the success of our season.

2. Macclesfield FC confirmed champions

The game that topped off this monumental season for the silks. A comfortable win against Ashton Athletic secured the title for Danny Whitaker boys and starting the party for everyone.

An incredible season for the boys was topped by a comfortable 4-0 victory not only securing the title but grasping promotion.

Even after the nervy first 45 minutes, which seemed to have been calmed down by the experience and leadership of 39-year-old Neil Danns as he slotted in the first. Which almost seemed to wake the boys up as the second half became a lot more comfortable.

As that full-time whistle blew, the party started: the non-believers and critics were silenced, and the league's was Macc's to win, which culminated with…

1. Macclesfield lift the trophy

And of course, the triumphant final game of the season saw the Leasing.com Stadium packed to the rafters, with The Silkmen comfortably seeing off AFC Liverpool. (For which you can watch the highlights at the top of this article).

The jubilation peaked as the squad lifted the North West Counties Football League Premier Division title in the stands, and posed for pictures with supporters, thanking the fans for being with them on this incredible journey.

This was followed by an outpouring of joy from Director of Football Robbie Savage and Owner Rob Smethurst in the national media. The rebirth was complete.
