Three friends prepare to take on 'deeply personal' trek to Amsterdam
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 31st May 2026
Three friends are preparing to walk from Macclesfield to Amsterdam.
Brothers Robert and Harry Thomson will be joined by pal Aiden Villers as they embark on an international expedition.
In doing so, they will be raising money for the stroke unit at Stepping Hill Hospital.
Macclesfield resident Robert said: "My uncle recently suffered a stroke and it really opened my eyes to how serious and life-changing they can be.
"Instead of just talking about it, we've decided to actually do something, pushing ourselves and raising awareness properly.
"This challenge is deeply personal to us and we want to give back to the ward and staff who supported our family during such a difficult time."

The trio will set off from Macclesfield on Friday, June 5.
Travelling around 600km, they are hoping to arrive in the capital city of the Netherlands around a week and a half later.
Robert added: "This is going to be tough.
"We'll be walking for days, carrying everything we need, dealing with the weather, the distance, and whatever else comes our way.
"There's no shortcuts with this — we either make it, or we don't.
"We're going to document the whole journey from start to finish so you can follow along and see how it really goes."
