With EURO 2020 in full-swing, it is easy to miss the great work happening at Macclesfield's local grassroots football clubs.

However, Tytherington Juniors are celebrating having just hosted one of the county's biggest ever festivals of football this weekend.

Over 1100 young players, 140 teams, and 100 adult volunteers all helped make the Saturday June 26 event come together.

Colloquially known as the Tythy Fives, the festival of footy invited local 5v5 teams of boys and girls to face-off against one another.

"This was our first ever football festival, so we were all nervous - in particular given COVID but it was an incredible success and unbelievable sight to see," said Tytherington Juniors Club Secretary Matt O'Brien.

"16 pitches full of players from 9am until 6pm - all split over the site in their age groups, socially distanced spectators all respecting our processes and COVID guidelines - ensuring it was able to be a fun and enjoyable day for both players and for everyone watching.

"Andy and his team at Macc Rugby Club were absolutely incredible in their support of the event, from ensuring that the pitches were in superb condition to providing fantastic service in their bars and food outlets.

"It was amazing to have two different local sports clubs coming together in Macclesfield for such a fantastic occasion and give the players a fantastic day.

"The success is very much largely down to our wonderful volunteers, who without them - the festival would not have been able to take place.

"This is what makes grassroots football such an incredible thing, it brings everyone together and amazing people volunteer their own time for free."

The Mayor of Macclesfield Councillor David Edwardes blew the first whistle of the festival off at 9am, and then closed the festival by handing out the final gongs.

Here's what he had to say:

"Reaching the ripe old age of 70 and sitting on the Councils I thought I'd seen everything but I can honestly say that I welled up a bit with the sheer pride of Tytherington Juniors FC putting on this incredible football tournament," said the Mayor.

"140 teams from all over the North West playing on 16 pitches at Macclesfield Rugby Union Club.

"Every single person praised the organisation of it. Every single person had a great time and were already talking about next year.

"Hearty congratulations to everyone involved. Also great to see Tytherington Juniors winning a few trophies. [David is also a Cheshire East Councillor for Macclesfield Tytherington]."

There was also a £2 programme at the event, to honour and fund Macclesfield's first ever grassroots football 5v5 festival.

Proud Dad and Macclesfield Nub News reader Stu Brown had this to say about his child's participation, where his son's team won a trophy at the event (fifth picture below).

"I am so proud of this young man, my boy, the one pictured with the trophy on his head," he said.

"Seven matches, seven wins, goals conceded zero, goals scored 15 (six by him) and champions cup winner. Love you lad."

If your child is interested in joining Tytherington Juniors, there is no better time than now to get involved.

Club Secretary Matt O'Brien added: "Tytherington Juniors are currently on the lookout for new players for a number of age groups, please contact us via Facebook @tjfc1987 for more information.

"Most of our teams play in the Mid-Cheshire Youth Football League for this coming season, we are a fast-growing, friendly and exciting club.

"If your player is looking for a team or new club and wants to make new friends - then look no further.

"Please feel free to message the club and we can hopefully arrange for your player to pop along down to our next training session."
