A parish near Macclesfield is to take to the pickets to prevent changes to parking charges.

The affluent village of Prestbury will protest against their two free carparks being turned into pay and display ones.

Campaigners - including those of Prestbury Parish Council - will take to the streets this Friday meeting opposite Base Pizza on New Road.

The protest begins at 4:30pm on Friday October 20.

Cheshire East Council own two carparks in Prestbury, being Shirleys Car Park on Shirleys Drive and Springfields Carpark.

Both have 61 spaces, and both are currently free to park in.

However, like the sweeping changes proposed across Macclesfield, Bollington and the wider borough, changes have been proposed in a public consultation.

Both are being consulted on the following rates:

The protest against the charges has the backing of Macclesfield's MP David Rutley.

He posted on the social media website X, "We need to say NO to @CheshireEast car parking charges in our villages.

"Please come and show your support for @PrestburyParish campaign at 4.30pm Friday 20th October at the car park opposite Base Pizza."

Prestbury will still have one free carpark, sort of. The parish is also served by the Bridge Green Car Park, which is privately owned. But only free for 90 minutes.

Other carparks in the parish include the small carpark at Prestbury Station, which is intended for rail users, rather than for residents, companies and those wishing to support businesses in Prestbury.

Prestbury's forthcoming protest against the two Cheshire East-owned sites going free, follows similar parking protests in Holmes Chapel and Sandbach, which you can read about across the Nub News network.

You can view the proposed fee changes for every Cheshire East parking site affected HERE and respond to the consultation via [email protected].

The consultation closes at the start of November.

Businesses across Prestbury have been contacted for comment.
