East Cheshire NHS Trust has urged visitors to Macclesfield Hospital to 'take extra precautions'.

It follows an increase in norovirus cases in the local area.

Anyone who has experienced symptoms, including diarrhoea and vomiting, is told not to visit the hospital until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours.

A statement released by the trust reads: "East Cheshire NHS Trust is currently advising visitors to Macclesfield District General Hospital to take extra precautions following an increase in norovirus cases within the local community. 

"While all wards currently remain open to visitors, we are asking the public to follow strict infection prevention and control measures to help us keep the virus off our wards and protect our patients.

"If you or anyone in your household has experienced symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting, please do not visit the hospital until you have been completely symptom-free for at least 48 hours. This is the most effective way to prevent the virus from entering our clinical areas and affecting vulnerable patients.

"For those who are visiting, we wish to remind you that alcohol hand gels are not effective against norovirus. 

"It is essential that all visitors wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water upon entering and leaving the hospital, and specifically before and after entering any ward area.

"Please note that while the hospital is not closed to visitors, specific visiting restrictions may be in place on some wards depending on the current clinical situation. 

"We strongly advise all visitors to check with a member of staff on the ward or call ahead before traveling to the hospital to ensure they are aware of any local restrictions.

"We thank our visitors for their understanding and cooperation as we prioritise the health and safety of everyone."
