Prestbury Cricket Club will celebrate their 150th birthday in Macclesfield this month.

Hitting bats and balls at The Village ground on SK10 4DG, the club was founded in 1872.

And to mark their sesquicentennial celebrations, a former England cricketer will attend a special evening.

Geoff Miller OBE (pictured above), has been voted Sports Speaker of the Year twice.

He will be the star turn at Prestbury Cricket Club's 150th anniversary dinner on Friday November 18.

Miller, also chosen as Cricket Dinner Speaker of the Year for the past four years, is a former England all-rounder who went on to become the first National Selector.

He appeared in 34 Test matches and 25 One Day Internationals for the England national team across 1976 to 1984.

Judging by the amount of testimonials to his act, it's going to be a fun evening at Macclesfield Rugby Club, the host venue.

The MC is Roger Dakin, a former international hockey goalkeeper and himself a renowned speaker and auctioneer.

There will be a Live Auction, a Silent Auction and the chance to bid for an autographed cricket bat signed by three England greats: Sir Alastair Cook, Jimmy Anderson and Joe Root, who was picked by Miller to make his debut for his country.

According to Wikipedia and a leading cricket writer Simon Hughes, a former First Class cricketer, Miller has a well developed sense of humour dating back decades.

In 1990 Hughes described Miller as being "the only remaining player who unfailingly visited the opposing team's dressing room after play to thank them for the game . . . and the last man to field at slip with a whoopee cushion up his jumper!"

A former Derbyshire captain, Miller became president of his county in 2014, the same year he was awarded an OBE in the New Year's honours list for services to cricket.

Among the tributes in the above link to the testimonials are these words from Kier Group, a leading construction, services and property company, who clearly relished Miller's contribution to one of their corporate events:

"Geoff was absolutely brilliant. He had all 179 delegates crying with laughter and after an extremely intense day of corporate strategy, figures, slides and presentations, Geoff's talk after the dinner was the perfect round-up to the day.

"Everyone left on a real high. He was absolutely excellent and every single delegate agreed that he was exactly right in tone, humour and friendliness for our audience."

The event costs £65pp. (Image - Prestbury CC)

The anniversary dinner starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £65 per person. Under-18s £40.
