Macclesfield Rugby Union Football Club's new Schools Outreach Programme got off to a flying start.

The programme, offered free of charge to local primary schools, aims to introduce young people to rugby through fun, inclusive sessions that promote the sport's core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

Over the past four weeks, Year 5 and Year 6 pupils at Gawsworth Primary School have enjoyed learning the fundamentals of tag rugby under the guidance of qualified Macclesfield RUFC coaches and volunteers.

Ria Horsley, who led the sessions alongside Phil Mason and Bex Ward, said: "It's been amazing to witness the pupils' development and confidence over the weeks, with some major talent emerging.

"All children gave 100% effort, worked well as a team, and above all, had great fun.

"We are extremely pleased they enjoyed themselves, and found a love for rugby."

The pilot initiative at Gawsworth Primary School followed an approach made by Helen Stuart, the club's schools liaison officer, who offered local primary schools the opportunity to participate in the free coaching scheme.

It culminated in a festival-style final event, where pupils put their new skills into practice in a series of friendly matches.

The young players formed their own teams, choosing the imaginative names Jelly Babies, Jelly Cats, Sour Patch and Skittles.

While approximately 40 tries were scored during the afternoon, the greatest success was seeing the development of teamwork, passing skills and defensive organisation across all participants.

At the conclusion of the event, all pupils received certificates recognising their participation and achievement, along with information about opportunities to continue their rugby journey at Macclesfield RUFC.

Following the success of the pilot, Macclesfield RUFC is now preparing to roll out the programme to two additional schools, with further expressions of interest already received.
