Tennis season is approaching, and there's a brand new sport to try out at Macclesfield Tennis Club on Park Lane.

This year, Maxonians will get the chance to try out the obscure American sport of pickleball.

Yep, you read that right, pickleball.

Held all year round, providing you book in advance, the new sport joins the roster of activities available at the Club which has existed for 118 years.

The game takes cues from tennis with the same net, but has a narrower court resmebling badminton.

Two or four athletes use solid paddles to hit a plastic ball with holes in over a net.

Some even compare the game to a larger form of ping pong.

So with the similarities to the Club's specialism, you won't have to learn much, and the skills from tennis are transferable.

The fast-growing sport has existed for less time than Macclesfield Tennis Club itself.

Pickleball was founded in Washington in 1965.

The court size is 20 feet by 44 feet.

Taster sessions are free, after which you can pay or play for £3 a session or join as a pickleball club member for £45 per year.

Online sources estimate at least 4,000 people play pickleball regularly in the UK.

Before Macclesfield introducing the sport, you previously had to travel to Congleton Lawn Tennis Club to try it out locally.
