Macclesfield lost 2-0 to playoff outsiders Spennymoor Town this afternoon as they seem all but destined for a 4th place finish, losing their third in four games.
Over 100 Spennymoor fans were in attendance, with the vast majority in fancy dress, littering the away end withsuperheroes. Despite that, the performance from Macc was anything but super.
Spennymoor started the better team as, with just four minutes on the clock, Taylor Hill floated a ball over the head of Luke Matheson which found Corey McKeown, who fought off Borthwick-Jackson and beat Ravenhill to open the scoring.
Macc would react well however, as James Gale fired a shot just past the post from the edge of the area after strong midfield play from Josh Kay, followed by a tame effort from Theo Chapman that the Spennymoor 'keeper collected easily.
Spennymoor would have the next best chance however, as Mackenzie Heaney's corner beat Ravenhill under pressure and found the head of Taylor who could only head wide.
Spennymoor would double their advantage after 36 minutes when another Heaney corner was headed out to Rob Ramshaw who unleashed a first-time volley that flew past Ravenhill and into the top left corner.
The Silkmen would come forward again with Kay, Duffy, and Gale all linking up well, and Edmondson would hit the target with a free kick on the edge of the area, but half-time without a clear-cut Macclesfield chance.
Two minutes into the second half, Kay found himself on the right-hand side and a ball into the box bobbled between Gale and Duffy, which would then be fired well over by Chapman from six yards out.
The Silkmen would have their best chance of the game just before the hour mark, when Matheson's cross fell for substitute Buckley-Ricketts and his volley fired off the crossbar, off the back of Brad James in the Spennymoor goal and off the line.
Matheson would be the centre of a Macc attack once again, as a quick give and go with Gale led to a Duffy shot that was easily saved by the Spennymoor goalkeeper. Duffy would go close again 30 seconds later, dragging a shot across the box and just past the post.
All five substitutes from John Rooney didn't stop the afternoon being miserable, and the game fizzled out after the 70-minute mark.
The Silkmen face Southport on Tuesday as they look to widenthe gap between them and their playoff rivals, as well as ending this poor run of form.
