Two local football clubs are coming together.

Bollington United and Macclesfield Town Ladies FC have announced a merger.

It is hoped this will create a 'bigger, better and stronger' future for girls' football.

The move will provide more opportunities for players, coaches and volunteers along with a clear pathway from youth football to the senior game.

By merging together, the clubs will be able to offer more teams, better facilities and build a stronger support system for everyone involved in the game.

David Spruce, Chairman of Bollington United FC, said: "This is a fantastic step forward for girls' football in our community.

"We've been working hard to grow our girls' section and Macclesfield Town Ladies FC have done an incredible job developing the female game, and by merging, we're creating a structure that ensures players have a long-term home to develop and enjoy their football from an early age right through to the senior game.

"We're excited to welcome their players, coaches, and volunteers into the Bollington United family!"

A joint statement released by Bollington United and Macclesfield Ladies sat the top priority now is 'continuity'.

Training arrangements will remain in place as the clubs work together to improve facilities to support both new and existing teams.

To aid this transition, committee members from Macclesfield Town Ladies FC will be taking on roles within Bollington United FC.

Kieran Stockton, chairman of Macclesfield Town Ladies FC, added: "Macclesfield Town Ladies FC has always been a leader in girls' football in the area, providing opportunities for female footballers for decades-dating back to players like Sue Wyatt, who played for us in the 70s before becoming the 17th female footballer to represent England. Our passion has always been about giving girls a place to play and shine.

"We have found a club in Bollington United that shares our mission and has an ambitious management team striving to improve the landscape of female football in our community.

"This decision wasn't taken lightly, but as the girls' game continues to grow rapidly, we saw an opportunity to create something bigger and better together. Both clubs could have continued independently, but by joining forces, we can push the girls' game to new heights- not just for our current players, but for the next generation who are yet to lace up their boots."
