MP's Column: 'Rise in climate change denial is deeply concerning'

As spring begins to arrive in Macclesfield, our gardens and parks burst into bloom, reminding us of nature's beauty and the delicate balance of our environment. But this balance seems to be under increasing threat.
Recent actions by major global players underscore the urgency of the climate crisis. BP has scaled back its renewable energy investments, shifting focus back to oil and gas. Across the Atlantic, Donald Trump's administration has dismantled key climate policies, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and doubling down on fossil fuels. Even Elon Musk, once a champion of green energy, has reversed course—perhaps unsurprisingly, given his private jet emits more CO2 in a month than the average American family does in a year.
The rise in climate denial is deeply concerning. Who should we trust to guide our actions? A billionaire with a vested interest in deregulation, or Sir David Attenborough, who has spent a lifetime documenting the natural world and warning of the catastrophic consequences of inaction?
The Labour government understands that tackling the climate crisis isn't just about protecting the environment, it's about securing our future. Investing in green energy means good jobs, lower bills, and greater national security. We can't afford to be left behind while other nations embrace renewable technology and drive innovation.
Locally, we must ensure our green spaces are protected and that sustainability is at the heart of future development. That means resisting short-sighted policies that prioritise quick profits over long-term environmental and economic benefits.
I know families are struggling with the cost of living, and tough choices must be made, but denying climate change risks leaving us all worse off in the long run. We must listen to the experts, act decisively, and prioritise long-term environmental policies over short-term gains. The cost of inaction is simply too great.
