Saturday 26 September
Enjoy this absorbing account of how education has been delivered over the centuries in Goostrey, as well as partaking in refreshments at this beautiful 17th Century village inn. Don't forget to book a table if dining!
Goostrey was one of the first villages in the North of England to have a dedicated school – a timber structure built in 1618 and attached to the original black and white Church, with the Church minister also acting as the school master. Over the years, it has moved to a number of different sites, including the School House, The Bankes next to the Old Forge on Church Bank, and the current school on Main Road, built in 1856. The village's educational history is both fascinating and a testament to the community's commitment to providing a basic education. There will be many old photographs and records to view as well as some great stories to tell! Please bring your own recollections and photos for us to scan and add to our collection.
