Macclesfield Nub News has you covered for the live results of Macclesfield constituency in this year's General Election.

Polling stations closed at 10pm today and are currently being counted at Macclesfield Leisure Centre.

We will update this article as results start to come in.

Macclesfield

6:39AM Labour has took Congleton too. Read more on our sister Nub News site.

6:35AM Six candidates showed up for the result declaration. All but Stephen Broadhurst (Reform) did not attend. Mr Broadhurst did show up for the count for over five hours, but did not get on stage for the results, despite him earning his deposit back with 12.48% of the vote in a comfortable third place.

6:05AM Our interview with Tim Roca has been posted on this link.

5:55AM "We have just witnessed a political earthquake," said Brian Puddicombe, of Macclesfield Labour Party.

5:52AM Tim Roca is Macclesfield's next MP. You will have to go back to 1914 to the last time the constituency elected someone who wasn't a Conservative or Unionist, but 110 years later, Labour has been elected.

5:50AM FULL RESULTS Stephen Broadhurst (Reform UK) 6592

Neil Christian (Liberal Democrats) 2482

Dickie Fletcher (Social Democratic Party) 222

Amanda Iremonger (Green Party) 2493

Tim Roca (Labour) 24,672

David Rutley (Conservatives) 15552

Christopher Wellavize 779

5:39AM Tim Roca has been elected as Labour's MP for Macclesfield.

5:26AM Macc Labour celebrating but nothing declared yet, minutes away.

5:20AM Esther McVey takes Tatton. Narrowly.

5:13AM Esther McVey looking giddy in Tatton. There's rumours she could run for Conservative Leader if she is re-elected.

5:08AM In the midst of a microsleep, I am awoke by the sudden applause of Macclesfield Greens, who are applauding their party for securing two MPs in one parliament for the first time.

4:53AM It looks like we are getting Tatton results first. The seat was last won by high-profile Conservative Esther McVey, who is standing again.

4:39AM Rishi Sunak holds onto his seat, securing 23,059 votes.

4:35AM Count looks 75% done in Macc, no official word as of yet.

4:29AM The Leisure Centre opens in an hour-and-a-half.

4:27AM David Rutley has arrived. He is currently at the Taste for Life Café.

4:19AM The results in Stockport see two Lib Dem victories and one Labour. Read more on Stockport Nub News.

4:16AM Results are coming in across Nub News towns. Stoke-on-Trent North, to name one, (Labour win). But no results from Macclesfield yet.

4:13AM Tim Roca has refused a photo, insisters for "after", says he looks "terrible now."

3:59AM Labour candidate Tim Roca has arrived. All candidates now here on counting floor except David Rutley, Conservative.

3:44AM Word on the floor is that 'Tatton is really tight' between Labour and Conservatives. Could go to a recount. No signs of the race being as close in Macclesfield.

3:39AM Mood from the Labour party camp looks cautiously optimistic. Nothing has been declared yet, but a staff member called it 'historic'.

A Macclesfield Labour campaigner said: "Macclesfield has demonstrated that it is no longer a Conservative constituency in the extreme. Change has been coming to Macclesfield a long time and now it has arrived in a very big way."

Still no sign of Mr Roca, the Labour candidate yet.

3:35AM Macclesfield Labour candidates are watching their former leader Jeremy Corbyn win his Islington North seat as an Independent. Their reactions can only be described as 'mild positivity'. However, a few yards away, Independent candidate Chris Wellavize exclaimed 'INDEPENDENT!'

Jeremy Corbyn won his Islington North seat with over 24,000 votes, 8000 more than the Labour Party.

3:21AM The Liberal Democrat candidate Neil Christian has arrived. It is Neil's third election he has contested in the Macclesfield constituency. He finished third in 2019 with 4.4% of the vote, and fourth in 2015 with 7.7% of the vote. With a record number of candidates in Macclesfield, but significant national gains produced for the Lib Dems, how will he fare tonight?

3:13AM Unofficial turnout number in Macclesfield looks like turnout is down, but only by a few percent. Could we see Macclesfield above the UK average once more?

3:11AM Of the 12 counting tables for Macclesfield, nine people are counting on each table. Each table also has a separate desk with eight baskets, one for every candidate, and one for 'DOUBTFUL'. No, this is not a last minute eighth candidate. According to the Electoral Commission, counters must consider whether the way a ballot paper has been marked means that a vote for one candidate is clearly apparent, if in doubt, get it in 'doubtful'. We will of course know how many ballots were spoilt at the final count. But we are still at least an hour away from those results yet, likely longer.

3:09AM Dickie Fletcher joins the counting floor for the first time.

3:05AM Amanda Iremonger has returned to the counting floor, having a chat on the sidelines. As the Greens are projected to double their MPs, could the Greens better the 2,310 votes they secured in Macclesfield in 2019?

3:01AM Labour are looking confident. Lots of supervisors of the count wearing red, not many Conservatives though.

2:58AM Reform UK's Stephen Broadhurst and Independent candidate Christopher Wellavize are having a chat, as the only candidates currently supervising the count. Wonder what they are talking about?

2:56AM We are expecting the results after 4am, but if it goes on a little longer than that, the Lane Swimmers at Macclesfield Leisure Centre will arrive for their morning swim. For everyone at this count however, I hope we aren't waiting that long!

2:39AM Dickie Fletcher, of the SDP said: "I am delighted to raise the profile of the party, which has stood more candidates and received coverage in the national media, being part of the debate in Macclesfield and nationally."

2:08AM We have spotted the SDP Candidate Dickie Fletcher. The Social Democratic Party were founded as an off-shoot from the Labour Party in the 1980s, and have made a comeback, in the way of standing 122 candidates in this election. Dickie's arrival means we have now spotted four of the seven candidates at the hustings. No sign of the three major parties yet, the Lib Dems, the Conservatives and Labour.

1:57AM Macclesfield hasn't had an Independent candidate since 2017, when Mark Johnson got 2.1% of the vote, in a field of five candidates. In 2024, Christopher Wellavize is the only Independent candidate in a field of seven this time around. Macclesfield Nub News spoke with Chris at the Taste for Life Café (which is still open) to see how he's feeling.

Christopher Wellavize was the only Indepedent candidate.

"I was first to vote in Adlington at 7am this morning," he said.

"I am currently coming down from six weeks of adrenaline.

"I feel a bit flat, it is very nice to think I was going to win tonight, as it is, I would be lucky to get 500 votes.

"Being realistic, that is about what I can aim for."

(Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

"If I got 5000 votes, I would be absolutely cockahoop.

"Lots of people have voted tactically [in Macclesfield], the message has been for the vast majority of people to see a change from Labour to Conservatives after 100 years.

"People would vote for me if it was down to the original candidate, but they want to make sure their vote counts in changing the complexion of Macclesfield from Conservatives to Labour.

"The people in Macclesfield are so much better than the people that represent us.

"We have got a great community, people have enthusiasm for life, positive, they work hard. There is no cynicism. Those people should be in government, we need the very best people in government and we are just not carrying that calibre of people. That has got to change.

"The pool of people you have to choose from in politics now is so thin, and we suffer the consequences. So we need to persuade people to take politics seriously as a second career, when they have achieved something in life, to put themselves forward.

"You need people with a backstory, people with experience in life, not just blank slates you can put an imprint on.

"My advice to any Independent candidate would be find a subject that you can run with. You have to have something that captures the imagination. There wasn't a topic like that, that really captured Macclesfield. When George Galloway went to Rochdale earlier this year and won, he latched onto the Gaza situation and got elected. In Macclesfield, where was no one topic I could choose to run with and say 'that is mine'.

"I would like to thank my wife Linda, she has been a widow for six weeks, she has not seen me at all!

"Everybody at work [Prestbury Plant and Garden] has supported me because it is not easy to put your colours at your business and say 'I am going to be involved in politics', because it can be very divisive."

1:55AM The ballots have all been verified, now the proper count begins.

1:34AM Amanda Iremonger, fresh from returning from a chat her fellow Green candidate in Tatton, spoke with Macclesfield Nub News.

"We have all been talking about how civilised everyone has been, and thoughtful about the electoral process," she said.

"I have had a lot of constituents getting in touch with me about a number of different issues from cats, to farming, to the situation in Palestine. So it has been a delight to interact with them all.

Amanda pictured in front of a coincidentally green background.

"It is the first time I have stood in a general election campaign. A lot of my colleagues are experienced hands at this. The previous candidate [in 2019] James [Booth] has been helpful, and put a lot of the groundwork in Macclesfield as well."

"Other colleagues that have been very active in Macclesfield in climate and environment activities have been very helpful as well.

"I have a Saturday morning in Plums Kitchen once every six weeks, where I get together with my colleagues of the Green Party, and anyone else who wants to come along.

"I have been delighted with the coverage in Nub News, and look forward to being able to engage with your readers as we go forward."

1:23AM Of the nine declared UK seats so far, turnout is looking lower than last election nationally. Turnout was 71.7% in Macclesfield in 2019, 4.4% higher than the national average. Macclesfield turnout is likely to be lower this time around, but will it be lower than the UK average too?

0:49AM The Green Party candidate Amanda Iremonger is the third candidate to arrive.

0:46AM It is going to be a struggle to fit all seven candidates within that Cheshire East backdrop. Good thing the stage is wider.

0:25AM Labour have the most ground staff here, they are perched right next to a TV showing the BBC's live coverage, which keeps showing the exit poll. The Conservatives also have a large presence. No sign of either candidate in Macclesfield for these two parties, however.

0:22AM Lots more urgency in the Macclesfield side of the count than the Tatton side of the count. The Tatton count is in front of a football goal, Macclesfield: basketball. I wish we had something more riveting to update you with at the moment.

0:00AM There are still 647 seats to be declared in the country, and as you may have guessed, Macclesfield is one of them. The BBC exit poll suggests a Labour landslide. But how will Macclesfield vote?

(Image - BBC)

11:47PM The most recent Macclesfield Nub News poll, from last Friday, shows slightly different results. Our readers poll suggested Labour 1st, Conservatives 2nd, Reform 3rd, Christopher Wellavize (Ind) 4th, Liberal Democrats 5th, Green 6th, SDP 7th.

11:43PM What do the polls say? The most recent YouGov poll predicts a Labour win in Macclesfield of 52.2%. They predict the Conservatives will get 25.6% of the vote in second. YouGov predicts Reform will come in third place in Macclesfield with 13.1% of the vote. They then predict that the Lib Dems will come in fourth with 4.7% of the vote. In fifth, the Greens with 4.0%. The two other candidates (SDP, Ind) have been grouped together with 0.4% of the vote.

11:20PM Believe it or not, the BBC are live-streaming this count... not that there is much happening yet, but what a futuristic step for democracy!

11:03PM We have spotted Stephen Broadhurst, the Reform UK candidate. He is wearing a floral blue tie and a light blue rosette for the party which is standing in Macclesfield for the first time ever.

11:00PM Macclesfield has a much larger electorate than Tatton (which is also being counted in this room), Macclesfield has almost eight thousand more people in our 75,000+ strong constituency. Perhaps that is why ITV predict that Tatton will be declaring results 30 minutes earlier than Macclesfield. ITV report Tatton will get results at 3:30am today. The Conservatives won both Tatton and Macclesfield in the last general election, in what has previously been considered 'safe seats'. Will they be victorious again this time?

10:46PM What was the time the results were declared at the last general election? ITV are predicting that Macclesfield will get the results at 4AM today. That is perhaps because at the December 12 2019 general election, the results in Macclesfield were declared at 4AM.

As a throwback, here were the results that day, four years and seven months ago...

The results of the last general election in Macclesfield.

10:36PM Who are the candidates in Macclesfield? A record seven candidates appeared on the ballot paper today. In alphabetical order they are: Stephen Broadhurst (Reform UK), Neil Christian (Liberal Democrats), Dickie Fletcher (Social Democratic Party), Amanda Iremonger (Greens), Tim Roca (Labour), David Rutley (Conservatives), Christopher Wellavize (Independent).

10:34PM It is not just Macclesfield that Nub News is covering tonight. Our nearby sister sites in Crewe, Stoke, Stockport and Sandbach are covering the counts.

10:27PM: The press box is packed with personnel BBC, ITV and Sky. It is great to see so many media outlets interested in our area. Perhaps they are expecting a shock tonight?

10:20PM When can we expect a result tonight? ITV's website has estimated that the Macclesfield results will come through at 4am. However, this is no guarantee, but rest assured (well actually nobody is getting any rest) Macclesfield Nub News will be here to cover it.

10:13PM: The count is taking place at Macclesfield Leisure Centre on Priory Lane. And it is not just Macclesfield's count that is being done here. The neighbouring constituency of Tatton is also getting their results counted and declared here.

10:08PM We have spotted the first candidate on the count floor, being Independent candidate Christopher Wellavize. Most parties seem to have representatives standing around the count, but Mr Wellavize is the only candidate we can spot on the floor as of yet.

It is the first general election Rob Polkinghorne has worked for Cheshire East Council for, having only been appointed in December 2023.

10PM: Cheshire East Council's Chief Executive Rob Polkinghorne formally opens the count, as polling stations close.

Macclesfield Leisure Centre of Priory Lane, Upton Priory, is hosting the count, where the results will be declared in the early hours of the morning.
