International cricketer Darren Berry - who played for Macclesfield Cricket Club in the 1990s - is returning to our town.

The 51-year-old cricket coach played for Macc for two seasons in his professional career.

The Melbourne-born Aussie won four honours with Macclesfield Cricket Club, and he is returning to the Victoria Road pitch to inspire Macc's current crop of players.

Mr Berry was part of the 1997 Ashes winning Australia team that beat England - however - he did not play in any series.

"We are excited to announce that former First Class Australian and Macclesfield CC Player, Darren Berry (aka Chuck), will be attending Club Practise at 6pm on Thursday 15 July to come and meet our current cohort of Macclesfield players," said the club.

"He is also planning on attending the 1XI Bollington CC v Macclesfield CC on Saturday 17 July 2021."

The right-handed Australian was known for his skills as a wicketkeeper. He scored 4273 runs in 153 matches.

He was nicknamed Chuck, due to sharing his surname with the late American rock and roll singer Chuck Berry.

"Chuck played at Macclesfield CC for two seasons in the 1990s, when the Club did a "double of the double" being both 1XI League and Cup winners, two seasons on the run," the club added.

"Following his retirement as a cricket player, Darren has had a varied career, predominantly as a Coach, but also as a Sports Commentator and Columnist.

"Darren has coached in the IPL, Pakistan Super League, Australian Premier League and is currently a London Spirit Assistant Coach, under Head Coach Shane Warne in England's new cricket format 'The Hundred'."

Maxonian's are welcome to come down to the club next Thursday to meet the former player.
