A community came together to make their voices heard over plans to create a new town near Macclesfield.

Residents gathered in Adlington on Saturday (October 25) to protest the plans to build at least 14,000 new homes in the parish.

Organiser Kasim Awan explained the demonstration was planned by the 'Supports of Adlington greenbelt' Facebook group at the last minute.

He said: "This protest was arranged to give concerned residents a chance to show their defiance against the plans for a new town of 20,000 houses on prime agricultural land and cherished greenbelt.

"The magnitude of this proposal means it will border the major neighbouring towns such as Macclesfield, Poynton and Stockport.

"People from all these areas attended the protest on Saturday, in solidarity with the people of Adlington, as they know what the proposed new town would mean for the welfare of their areas people, nature, infrastructure and NHS services."

The Adlington new town project is being led by Belport, a UK-based investment and management company, with Revcap as capital and delivery partner.

According to a website set up for the scheme, much of the Adlington site is owned by a joint venture between the two firms.

They are proposing to build 'at least' 14,000 modern homes with a mixture of low-to-medium rise apartments and town houses.

Freddie James, director at Belport, said: "We believe Adlington can be a place for innovation, for healthy and sustainable lifestyles and an opportunity to explore ways to live in the 21st century.

"The proposed new community will specifically address the housing crisis in the North West and can deliver up to 40% Affordable Housing alongside commercial spaces, community facilities, parks, health centres, schools and services delivered and funded through the development by Belport and its partners."

Mr James added: "Overall Adlington will become a significant contributor to growth in the region, by providing new employment spaces and opportunities, homes for workers, and improved infrastructure.

"As such it will make a significant contribution to local, regional and national taxes and in return, residents will be able to access Government services like other residents of the area."

The 'Supports of Adlington greenbelt' have a follow-up planned for Saturday, November 8.

Those wishing to take part are invited to gather in Adlington at the Poynton Relief Road roundabout near Starbucks.
