Concerns over petrol pricing as Macclesfield stations charge 'significantly' more than those in neighbouring towns
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 19th Mar 2026
Macclesfield's MP has raised concerns about the high fuel prices in town.
Tim Roca sent a letter to Gordon Balmer, executive director of the Petrol Retailers Association, on Thursday, March 19.
He has highlighted the fuel pricing disparity, with stations in Macclesfield charging up to 17 pence more per litre when compared with neighbouring towns.
Mr Roca wrote: "I am writing to raise a matter that has been brought to my attention by a number of constituents in Macclesfield, and which is causing growing concern locally.
"Residents have consistently reported that petrol stations in Macclesfield are charging significantly higher prices than those in surrounding areas. This is not a new issue, but recent developments have sharpened these concerns.
"Following news of rising global oil prices, local forecourts appear to have increased prices almost immediately. However, when wholesale prices have eased, there has been little to no corresponding reduction at the pump."
Mr Roca continued: "Constituents are now reporting differences of up to 17 pence per litre compared with nearby towns. For many people, particularly those who rely on their cars for work or family responsibilities, this is not a marginal difference. It represents a real and ongoing financial burden.
"While I fully recognise that global events, including conflict in the Middle East, can have an impact on supply and pricing, it is difficult to reconcile these sustained local disparities with wider market trends. The persistence of higher prices in Macclesfield, even before recent international developments, raises legitimate questions about fairness and transparency.
"I would therefore urge the Petrol Retailers Association to look into this issue. It is important that consumers have confidence that pricing is being applied fairly and not to the detriment of specific communities.
"I would welcome any insight you can provide into the factors driving these local price differences, as well as any steps the Association can take to ensure greater consistency and accountability across the sector."
