Details revealed for funeral of Macclesfield Hurdsfield Councillor

The funeral for a Macclesfield councillor who passed away over the festive period, will take place later this month.

Hurdsfield Cheshire East Councillor Stephen Carter received an outpouring of warm tributes across the political spectrum, and now more details have been revealed about how residents and friends can pay tribute.

In a new statement issued today by Macclesfield Labour Councillors and the Cheshire East Labour Party

"The Cheshire East Labour Group is sad to announce the death of Steve Carter."

Macclesfield Hurdsfield Councillor Stephen Frank Carter passed away on December 29. He had served the ward since May 2013.

"We are very sorry to announce that Cllr Steve Carter died on Thursday 29 December, whilst being treated ay Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport after suffering a heart attack whilst on holiday. Steve was 59.

"Steve served on Macclesfield Borough Council from 1999 until 2005 including as group leader, and as Cheshire East Councillor for Macclesfield Hurdsfield from April 2013 until December 2022.

"Steve was our friend and esteemed colleague. He had so much experience and a wealth of political skills which he used in the service of others for so many years.

"Our thoughts are with Steve's wife Nell, a former Cheshire County Councillor, and his family."

The funeral will take place at Macclesfield Crematorium on Tuesday January 24.

The funeral will be at Macclesfield Crematorium at 3.30pm on Tuesday 24 January.

Sandbach Elworth Cllr Sam Corcoran said: "Steve had recently retired from teaching at Manchester Grammar School and had taken on new roles at Cheshire East Council. He had been the Vice Chair of the Finance Sub-Committee and had worked well looking into the role of the council's wholly owned companies.

"He will be greatly missed for his hard work, energy and loyalty to the Labour Party."

Donations in honour of Steve are requested to the international poverty charity ActionAid.

Macclesfield South Cllr Brian Puddicombe, who was a close friend of Steve's said: "Steve was an accomplished and experienced politician and the community of Hurdsfield have lost a great champion, who stood by his Labour values in all he did.

"Steve lived life to the full and had many interests. But his enduring passion was for education and I know he made a real difference to the lives of many hundreds of young people during his decades as a teacher."
