Golf centre looking to transform former nine-hole course into padel courts

A golf centre has applied for planning permission for four padel courts on part of a former nine-hole course which became unviable after some of the land was purchased for the Poynton Relief Road.
Adlington Golf Centre, which opened in 1992 as a driving range, now incorporates an academy course, a pitch and putt course and a graduate course.
The centre has always operated as a 'pay-and-play' facility and is open to all members of the public without any private membership requirements.
In 2017 planning permission was granted for the Poynton Relief Road, and Cheshire East acquired part of a former nine-hole graduate golf course at the centre under compulsory purchase powers.
A planning statement submitted by Emery Planning on behalf of the Adlington Golf Centre, states: "The new road infrastructure rendered this course unviable for continued use and it has partly been re-purposed as an 18-hole adventure golf course.
"The council has allocated the part of the former graduate course to the eastern side of the bypass as employment land through the adopted local plan.
"There remains a need to identify a long-term and viable use for the residual part of the former course beyond the adventure golf course and our client's new planning application seeks to re-purpose this land for padel courts."

The proposed scheme would feature four padel courts, enclosed by glass panels and mesh fencing to a height of four metres.
There would be floodlighting columns to a maximum height of six metres and some hardstanding around the courts to allow for access and seating areas.
The planning document states: "The proposed scheme would provide much-needed sports facilities and there is identified unmet need for this type of facility in Cheshire East.
"Furthermore, it would re-use redundant former golf course land on a wider site that already benefits from excellent infrastructure and leisure facilities, and it would maximise the prospect for linked trips.
"There would be benefits in terms of health and wellbeing."
The application, number 25/0979/FUL, can be viewed on the planning portal on Cheshire East Council's website and the last date for comments from the public is May 7, 2025.
