A car thief has been posing as a police officer.

Cheshire Police are investigating reports of a man pretending to be a British Transport Police officer.

He did so in order to steal a vehicle on South West Avenue in Bollington.

As such, police are urging the public to remain vigilant.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At 6.45pm on Tuesday, August 26, police were called to reports of a man impersonating a police officer on South West Avenue, Bollington.

"The caller reported that a man posing as a BTP officer had attended their address to purchase a car that the victim was selling on Auto Trader.

"The man took the car but failed to transfer the money for the vehicle.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 2163531."

If you are unsure about whether the person you are dealing with is a genuine police officer, call 101 to check their identity.
