Macclesfield: 'People understandably feel hurt and angry' - David Rutley MP responds to Boris Johnson party scandal

By Alex Greensmith 15th Jan 2022

Macclesfield's MP David Rutley has broke his silence on the latest round of alleged lockdown parties at 10 Downing Street.

On the day that Boris Johnson has apologies to Her Majesty The Queen, our town's MP has shared his view on staff parties happening when COVID restrictions were imposed on Macclesfield and the rest of thenation.

In a statement, Mr Rutley, (60), said: "People understandably feel hurt and angry about recent reports involving events at No 10 Downing Street."

"It was right that the Prime Minister personally apologised on Wednesday during PMQs and he has taken full responsibility for what has happened.

"We should now let Sue Gray, the former Director General for Propriety and Ethics, complete her inquiry and establish all the facts concerning the events – putting them in the public domain as soon as possible."

Mr Rutley gave no indication of whether he thinks Boris Johnson should resign, as pressure piles on the PM from his own party.

Macclesfield Conservatives didn't indicate whether they think Boris should resign, contrary to the believe of three of the main four parties of Macclesfield.

You can read what Macclesfield Labour, Macclesfield Liberal Democrats and Cheshire East Greens had to say in Wednesday's article here.

Rutley has previously denied that he attended any Christmas parties.

However, our request for comment was made before the latest allegations of a party in No. 10 in April 2021, just before Prince Philip's funeral. So we sought for clarity on his attendance over his staff over the new slew of alleged parties.

A spokesman for Mr Rutley said: "I can confirm that neither David or his staff attended any of the events."

2022 will mark Rutley's 12th year as an MP for Macclesfield.

Earlier in the week, the father-of-four welcomed a massive investment into Macclesfield College.
