A 20-year-old has biked up a French mountain, raising thousands for a cancer charity.

Joe Bergin trekked up the 6000 foot mountain of ski resort Alpe d'Huez, just by cycling.

The Bollington lad did it to raise money for the charity Brain Tumour Research, after his dad Liam Bergin was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The mountain spanned over eight miles, and has seen Joe raised £1512 for the national charity.

"It felt like my legs were crying," said Joe.

"Me and my dad love cycling, and the route is an important part of the Tour de France. So it felt the right thing to do.

"Dad always wanted to do this but he was never able to, so I wanted to fundraise and also give awareness for what he is going through.

"It may be too late to find a cure for him, but anything is possible with the work the charity are doing.

Like father like son. Joe's fundraiser comes just weeks after Liam had completed a charity cycle for the same cause. Liam has a Stage 4 Glioblastoma, which is currently an incurable cancer. (Image - The Bergin Family)

"We're really grateful for all the donations and it means the world to us that you can all support our cause. It is really important to us and has benefits close to home for us, as well as helping countless people across the UK.

Cancer Research UK suggest 34 Brits are told they have a brain tumour every day.

Liam Bergin (51) was diagnosed in April 2020, and is still going strong, but can only cycle short distances himself so had to track the challenge's progress from home.

"I am determined to keep going for as long as I can, I am doing this for every person who has died from a brain tumour."

Liam used to be Head of Catering at the University of Manchester, where his son now attends.

He wasn't working for the majority of the pandemic, but Liam has made a valiant return to the workplace, at Flour Water Salt on Macclesfield's Market Place.

Liam himself raised £6000 earlier in the year for Brain Tumour Research by doing a gentler cycling challenge closer to home.
