Macclesfield: David Rutley MP speaks after Sue Gray report release

By Alex Greensmith

5th Feb 2022 | Local News

This week, we asked Macclesfield MP David Rutley the following questions.

1. What is your response to the Sue Gray report?

2. When did you first know of these parties taking place?

3. The report states 'failures of leadership and judgement'. Mr Rutley, do you think Mr Johnson is fit to be Prime Minister?

4. Any other message you would like to give to your constituents?

And after a turbulent week in parliament for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, this was Mr Rutley's reply:

"I understand why people feel let down and angered by the events at No 10 Downing Street that are now under investigation, particularly when so many people made real personal sacrifices throughout the pandemic; to protect themselves, their loved ones and our communities."

Our town's MP for the last 12 years added: "Following the publication of Sue Gray's initial findings, the Prime Minister has once again rightly offered his personal apologies for things that he did not get right and for the way these matters have been handled.

"The Prime Minister has also committed to accept Sue Gray's recommendations, set out in her initial findings, regarding the lessons that must be drawn from these events.

"He recently announced in the House of Commons that changes will be made to how both Downing Street and the Cabinet Office are run.

"A new Office of the Prime Minister will be created, with a Permanent Secretary amongst other changes. The Prime Minister will also set out further steps to improve the communication and engagement between No10 and Parliament.

"With respect to the events now under police investigation, Sue Gray has said in her initial findings, "No conclusions should be drawn, or inferences made from this other than it is now for the police to consider the relevant material in relation to those incidents.

"That is why we should now allow the Metropolitan Police investigation to be completed, so that all the facts are established and the appropriate action can be taken."

Macclesfield's Conservative MP Mr Rutley (60), has not spoke out against Boris Johnson, as he faces calls from across the parties to resign, over alleged lockdown parties taking place inside 10 Downing Street.
